Developmentally disabled US citizen deported to Mexico
Family of deported Lancaster man sues
Described by kin as developmentally disabled, he was sent to Tijuana after being arrested for trespassing and has vanished.
By Sam Quinones, Times Staff Writer
June 12, 2007

The family of an American citizen who disappeared after apparently being mistakenly deported to Tijuana a month ago has filed suit asking the U.S. government to help find him.

Pedro Guzman, 29, a Lancaster construction worker, is developmentally disabled and penniless, and he hasn't been heard from since May 11, said his family at a news conference in Los Angeles on Monday.

His mother, Maria Carbajal, said she spent the last month in Tijuana living out of her car while searching in vain for her son. She said neither the U.S. nor the Mexican government has helped in her search for him.

"I've done a lot," she said, "and I haven't found him."

3. Do you think Lou Dobbs will do a story about this on his show?
I keep hearing about he's one of the few people who stands up for working Americans who are hurt by immigration policy. This is a perfect example of a working American getting fucked over.

5. If the government mistakenly deported him...
...then they damned well are responsible for helping to find the man!

Geez.

7. This is always what happens when you treat people like they're not people.
Oh, hell.

9. how do you "mistakenly" deport someone, anyway?
I'm guessing an assumption or two were made, and Mr. Guzman might not have been able to express to Lancaster's finest that he was a US citizen.

11. I used to translate here in San Francisco for people being held
in the county jail for visa violations.

They were held for months without being arraigned.

They had no access to attorneys.

They couldn't even let their families know they were still alive.

And that was in the late 80s, in a blue town, before Ashcroft.
