Bird flu confirmed in Britain
I'm not still quite awake, but I did catch the breaking news on BBC just now that a couple of thousand dead turkeys in Britain have been confirmed to have had the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus.

1. Yep, here's the CNN article
Bird flu kills 2,500 turkeys in UK
POSTED: 5:29 a.m. EST, February 3, 2007

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- An outbreak of bird flu on a farm run by Europe's biggest turkey manufacturer Bernard Matthews has killed 2,500 birds, government officials said on Saturday.

Government veterinary experts were called to the farm near Lowestoft in eastern England late on Thursday and preliminary tests show the birds were killed by the H5 strain of avian flu.

Further tests are under way to identify the strain more precisely, and restrictions are in place to stop the movement of birds to or from the site.

"All poultry farmers are in shock as we had no inkling that is had suddenly turned up in England," National Farmers' Union Poultry Board chairman Charles Bourns told Reuters.

2. Here's the BBC article
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/suffolk/6326681.stm

The article still says "testing." The BBC has confirmed, since, however that it is definitely H5N1. The next step is a massive poultry cull in England.

4. I lived there when they culled 1000's of cows over mad cow disease
It was horrific. We don't know if we'll ever be affected and I doubt we'll ever be allowed to give blood again. But the potential for the bird flu to be the next great pandemic is even more worrying.

3. Now, more precisely, H5N1
The European Commission says tests have confirmed that the avian flu which killed 2,600 turkeys at a Suffolk farm is the H5N1 virus.
...
According to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, there were 160,000 other turkeys on the farm, and they will be slaughtered.
...
A three-kilometre protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone will now be be set up.
...
Bart Dalla Mura, Bernard Matthews commercial director, has said the birds had not been imported and were raised in a shed.
