Governor Declares Emergency in Four Florida Counties Affected by Tornados

In what meteorologists are claiming to be "not the normal" weather for this time of the year in Florida, a series of strong and severe thunderstorms and a suspected killer tornado or possible tornadoes ripped through multiple Florida areas shortly before dawn, causing massive damage in a 20 square mile radius just in Lake County. The most destruction seems to have occurred between the predawn hours between 3 and 4 a.m.

The body of a baby was found in a home and authorities are reporting that the infant was not a resident of that house. They are now trying to find out where the baby came from and who its parents are. A teenage boy was seen talking to news reporters about trying to save a woman. He said he had checked her pulse and tried to save her but his attempt was unsuccessful. He said he had seen two dead bodies today and that it just wasn't right. When authorities were asked if they expect more casualties they replied that it is certainly a possibility. Home to home searches are being conducted and it is being reported that dogs have been seen being brought into the area. The reports are assuming they are cadaver dogs to search for bodies, however a sheriff reports they are searching for live people and will continue to search until sundown and then scale back the search during the night and stay in the area and search all weekend if needed or until they feel confident that all residents are accounted for.

8. this isn't news worthy?
I understand your point that we need to see and hear of the graphic images here about the suffering of the Iraqi's, but that doesn't make this any less horrible or less newsworthy.

9. One of these incidents, according to those suffering, and the insurance agencies
will be called an act of God

The other was the act of some fucking asshole who decided his political/religious beliefs are more important than life itself. Which should get more coverage? The weather, or acts of terrorism?

12. That doesn't diminish the tragedy and sorrow felt
...by those that experience each event.

We need to work to somehow undo/repair the damage we have done in Iraq (and elsewhere) ... however, tragedy is tragedy and the families of all that have died are grieving; I extend my heartfelt condolences to all.

14. Since terrorism is actually insignificant compared to the damage of weather
I'd say it's the weather that has been horrifically under-reported.

No terrorist has ever destroyed a city. Katrina and George, however, have.

In your zeal to be righteously indignant, however, you seem to be confusing George and al qaida, hamas, all those fun but annoying gnats. Or are you confusing terrorism with the state-sponsored war in Iraq? It's really hard to tell.

Frankly, almost all we do talk about in this country, all we devote our money to, is terror which can't do nearly as much damage as global warming is. Yet we have done NOTHING to prepare for the famine, drought, and loss of our coastal cities.

Shake your head and get your priorities in order.

It's the entire system that is out of order, and you're point your fingers at me? You are the one with your priorities out of order.

20. both
I can't see your logic in differentiating between who is more important. The unfortunate Floridian or the Iraqi national? I say both deserve coverage. You say the Iraqi. You make the same argument as those people who talk about American lives are worth more than Iraqi lives. You have just reversed it.

Is anyone's suffering worse than any one else's? No.

Do I think that our media plays favorites, games, and distractions? of course, but that doesn't mean that 124+ Americans who died in Florida are less of a news item than people dying in Iraq. I happen to agree with you that this war would have been over a long time ago, had we the availability of video of what was going on over there.

13. Really? Where? In what action?
Provide a link.

Or, perhaps, since you're worried about the coverage for it, give it its own thread, since it isn't relevant to this one.

19. SIgh!!
How sad for all those who lost their kids today. 121 dead Iraqis in one attack. Thanks George Bush.
Still I imagine that if the parents of that dead baby in Florida are alive, their pain is no different than the pain of the poor invaded Iraqi citizens.

21. OK, new rule at DU: Every thread must be about dead Iraqi babies.
No threads about other tragedies or any other deadly events.

Little Wing - this was an impolite crapping on Donsu's thread. Why don't you learn some manners?

6. On the television that night, they said 100 MPH.
Point is, we need to find out for sure, because I know if it stays at 250, there will be no change in construction code.

10. It is not possible to build a tornado proof home.
unless you build the whole thing underground.

It's just the nature of tornados.

15. But I couldn't help noticing that only one brick house fell, and that
was over 50 years old. The ones that smashed like matchboxes and/or twisted like bent straws, were frame construction with aluminium supports.

22. "Not normal weather" meaning an El Nino year
This el nino is so strong they're expecting it to last beyond spring (which is great because it keeps the hurricanes at bay a while longer).

The last time el nino was this strong, back in 1998, 47 people died in FL in February tornadoes. The land our house sits on was cleared by one of those tornadoes.
