"I appreciate you inviting the head of the 'Republic' party," Bush said to laughter.
Reuters: Debate on Iraq healthy, Bush tells Democrats
By Richard Cowan and Caren Bohan

....Stressing bipartisanship throughout a speech that focused mainly on domestic priorities, Bush also made light of a quip during his State of the Union address last month, in which he referred to the "Democrat" party instead of the "Democratic" party. Some Democrats viewed it as an intended slight meant to imply the party was not democratic.

"Now look, my diction isn't all that good. I have been accused of occasionally mangling the English language. And so I appreciate you inviting the head of the 'Republic' party," Bush said to laughter....

1. I do not see how he considers himself the leader of the republic party.
I suspect that the rest of the republics would argue that point.

2. Interesting, I wonder if Bush is signalling that he is going to abandon this usage "democrat party".

6. By the way, I don't believe for a minute any of this was unintentional, but it would still
be a move in the right direction.

I don't applaud anyone for simple decency they should have employed from the beginning, but I will recognize it as a proper step.

17. It was just another way for him to deny taking responsibility for his
actions and behavior.

I say - hold his feet to the fire till they catch and then pour on the kerosene and watch the bastard go down in flames.

14. I'm not going to applaud a president for pronouncing the name of
the opposition party correctly, or for acknowledging that he used an insulting bastardization of it in his State of the Union speech. I think you're giving him a bit of the 'soft bigotry of low expectations' here.

11. I think he was trying to head off the labelling of the "Republic Party"
that has started taking on. He knows how damaging it is to demean others because he does it all the time. He's a bully and his party is a party of bullies.

3. Why doesn't he tell that whopper about looking for WMD's under his desk
It sounds like that would get all these yokels rolling on the floor with laughter.

What's next? Probably a quote from one of the "democrats" in attendance that went, "Sure, he's a war criminal, a murderer and a torturer. But we like him because he's funny!"

Disgusting.

7. But, IMO, this is more than a joke if Bush intends to signal an end...
to calling our party, as Joe McCarthy did, the "Democrat" party.

13. He never once said that he deplored the use of such language and
that it should cease. He wasn't signalling anything, just trying to get himself out of hot water because he had been called on it.

10. It does not appear to me to be a good thing either to allow serial killers into one's meeting.
Wonder if he had his meatloaf for the day.

12. Whatever. I don't know if his SotU remark was intended as an insult or not-
I expect it was, but I'm not sure. He is nearly illiterate, after all.

The relevance of the phrase, in my mind, is that it shows where he gets his information and ideas. "Democrat Party" is a phrase of the lunatic, McCarthyite area of right-wing politics. It's almost worse if he didn't realize it was the wrong name. How insulated and incurious can a man be?

20. No Balls What so ever
I can't understand how our newly elected Democratic leaders can allow this criminal into the same room. Unless they are also lying to the people. Bush and Cheney have committed treason and are guilty of malfeasance in office. Impeachable offenses and worthy of jail time!
