1. I salute you for reminding us of this.
This is my 3,000th post. Not a big deal, but I cannot think of a more important post to respond to with this mini-milestone of mine.

2. In comparing to other conflicts
WW II 405,399 4 years
WW I 116,516 2 years
Vietnam 58,151 10 years

The U.S. Armed Forces has been exceptional in keeping fatalities low in four years of OIF.

3. Welcome to DU, pettypace!

5. I agree whole-heartedly with your assessment
However, its stunning to me how far the military has progressed in curtailing their losses during battle, in stark contrast to the numbers of their previous campaigns.

This article delves into topic.

Even so, by any measure, this war is the shining example of the low-casualty conflicts typical of the post-Vietnam War era. The United States has lost about three combat deaths per day since the ground war started March 20. By comparison, the Vietnam War had a death rate of 18 U.S. soldiers per day for 7½ years, and World War II had a rate of 221 combat deaths per day for four years, according to military historian Albert Nofi.
