9. I think that tracking donations from DU members helps
people see how their (sometimes small) donations add up to make a big difference, which is encouraging for me to see.

I also think that donating through DU lets candidates & campaigns see the power of the "netroots" -- we are citizens who post online and donate and give our time and candidates should listen to our points of view.

11. does anybody know what these goals really mean?
so they set a goal and either hit it or don't. If you're a salesperson who doesn't get a commission unless you "make your number", or a CEO who gets a bonus check if you "hit the target" then you do all sorts of unnatural acts to work the numbers, even to the detriment of your company's long-term success.

But these goals are set by the campaigns themselves, are they not? Is there a matching funds to be achieved? Is there a deathknell if they miss by $18.43?

Or is this just a whole lot of hoohah?

I know Edwards campaign was earlier hoping for 14M; adjusted their target to 9M. But so the hell what? Regardless of what target they were shooting for, the only meaningful number is "how are they doing?" and that should not have a magic cutoff date of the last day of June. It will be unfortunate if the press reports trumpet "Edwards campaign misses target - obviously going down in flames" like the mindless herd of wildebeests they are.

This Saturday, June 30, is the last day of the second quarter fundraising period for federal candidates. Soon after, campaigns will publicly report their donation totals for the quarter. This means that all of the Democratic candidates for president are feverishly working to bring in last-minute donations so they can post the highest-possible fundraising totals for the period.

If you are thinking of donating to any of the Democratic candidates for president, now is a good time to do it.
And if you do, please do so through the Democratic Underground ActBlue page:

http://www.actblue.com/page/du-presidential

By donating through our ActBlue page, we can easily keep track of how much money our members have donated to the various Democratic candidates for president. And the campaigns will know that the money came from DU. I will post periodic updates to let you know where DUers donations are going.

Thanks for your support. Go Dems!

"...all of the Democratic candidates for president are feverishly working to bring in last-minute donations so they can post the highest-possible fundraising totals for the period"

all spin, all media-message whanking, no substance

Oh, I get that it matters, because "maahhhh-ummmm, all the kids are doing it" but it is still BS

it is still a glaring example of the Assault on Reason

and goals and deadlines are how you do it. If you don't set goals or deadlines, you end up like Iraq.

15. sure, goals and deadlines are motivators
I set myself a goal on almost everything I do - whether average speed on a bike ride, gas mileage on a drive - whatever.

I'm just saying that they are overhyped and the media makes too much of them. Case in point - Edwards' campaign is within sniffing distance of its adjusted goal. If it makes it six hours AFTER the "deadline" rather than BEFORE, so the hell what?

17. SOME people would like to see a Democrat in the White House in 2009
THE ONES WHO DO might generally contribute money to their candidate of choice so as to help them have the funds to run for the office.

I'm sorry you have a problem with that.

18. christ on a cracker
i don't have a problem with fundraising - and I have contributed to Edwards' campaign three times, most recently yesterday in an effort to do my part to help achieve the frigging goal.

And I have been watching it all week, rooting for them to make it.

I've also contributed to a couple of others, just to drive up the "total number of contributors"

I just asked - philosophically - what the real significance of the 'goal' is in actual facts, vs perceptions. And the answer is clear - it is phony. It is all perception. It is a mythical milestone, like the damned "sweeps week" numbers in tv, where all they get is data on who can best manipulate sweeps week, rather than who actually has more viewers the rest of the time. And "No Child Left Behind", where you measure which schools are better at jobbing the system to get better test scores.

This, unfortunately, is what our world has come to. There is no reality, only perception. And this is how the next President will be selected, and I sure as hell hope the dems can outmaneuver the reps this time and fool more people, if that is what it takes, then the reps do.

Proposed campaign slogan:

"Our BS is better than their BS"

24. It does matter
because the deadline is when they report to the FEC. Future donors look at that when they decide whether or not the candidate is viable. Same thing for getting endorsements.

Think of it as sweeps week. That's when advertisers decide how much a certain TV time slot is worth, based on the Nielson ratings for a snapshot of time within a TV season. While it's still helpful to have high ratings the week after sweeps, it is much more beneficial to have high ratings during that snapshot week.

19. email from Edwards campaign - July 3rd is Elizabeth's birthday
Dear (redacted),

Thanks to you, we're within striking distance of our $9 million fundraising goal with just under 48 hours to go. If we make it, the campaign will have the resources we need to compete going forward.

johnedwards.com/endofquarter/48-hours

I'm proud of the way this community has stepped up in these last crucial days. And like so many Americans, I'm proud of Elizabeth and the way she stood up to Ann Coulter and said no to hate speech.

In these last 48 hours, I'm asking you to do two things. By contributing today, you can help us reach our goal. And you can join with me in letting Elizabeth know how proud we are of her by leaving a personal message for her when you contribute. Please give what you can, at:

johnedwards.com/endofquarter/48-hours

July 3rd is Elizabeth's birthday and a great way to celebrate would be a donation by our June 30th deadline to help us hit our goal.

All of us are working so hard to reach this goal because we know the stakes are so high. Our cause is building one America—a place where everyone has a fair shot at the American Dream and no one is left out in the cold. It's truly universal health care. It's stopping global warming. It's bringing our troops home starting today. And it's not just talking about poverty—it's eliminating it.

But none of us can do this alone. This campaign is about working together on the big changes we believe in. It's true now, and it will still be true when I'm president—we're in this together.

So in these last 48 hours, please make a contribution to help us reach our goal, and join me in thanking Elizabeth for showing that hate and fear are no match for civility and courage.

Please give what you can:

johnedwards.com/endofquarter/48-hours

Thank you,

-- John Edwards

same on Edwards' site and the others, I think. I wanted to compare that before using DU and that should be emphasized that sending a signal of your loyalties and group adds statement to your donation with no downside like fees or anything more onerous at all.
