do not think these new dead troops are the helicopter deaths.

Curfew in three Iraqi cities

by Salam Faraj 33 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) -
Iraq has imposed curfew on three cities, including the oil rich northern city of Kirkuk, after a surge of car bombings and shootings left bodies in the streets and dozens of people wounded.

The northern Sunni town of Samarra and the restive city of Mosul were also put under curfew after outbreaks of violence, police said Saturday.

Kirkuk became the target of insurgents who set off seven car bombs that killed two people and wounded 28, police said.
.............

The attack wounded another 17 people, mainly women and children, while many more were reported injured in the other six car bombings.
.........
But the military also lost two of its troops in different incidents, taking its losses in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 3,091, according to an AFP count based on
Pentagon figures.

3. Real crackdown? I can see how some would mistake the current occupation
and civil war as a mild disturbance.

I suppose that "the real crackdown" will open the floodgates for demockracy to take root and flourish.

7. I didn't make my point clear
The point is the Iraqi's are being told - the message american voters sent them in '06 - of "We will not be a military crutch for the Iraqi leadership to lean on past '07".Unless you support the war in Iraq and argue for are continued commitment,ok then, but that is how I see the Iraqi's reading of our '06 vote.
Iraqi govt must take the lead role in operations to secure the country. If you read nothing but western MSM, you only get western MSM spin reported from the bars of the green zone or from offices in the US..

Then you don't know what steps are being taken next week

8. I am sorry to say your point did not get much clearer with that post.
I think the message that American voters sent the world in the 2006 elections was that we are looking for a different approach to solving international problems and that we are extremely unsatisfied with the way that the country is being run.

Reckless and unfocused use of military force is not one of the favored methods of working our international neighbors. Our troops are supposed to defend us, not puppet governments in other countries.

9. "Redeploy" is what americans want. Maliki heard that loud and clear
This article was posted in the Iraqi Slogger. An interview of "the puppet" Al-Maliki;
http://www.iraqslogger.com/index.php/post/1168/Interview_Iraqi_Prime_Minister_Nouri_Al-Maliki

Interview: Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki
Prime Minister: "Equality For All Iraqis And No Terrorist Haven"

In an interview with Al-Hayat, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki asserted that the new security plan will constitute a major turning point in the government's work in the upcoming couple of months. http://www.iraqslogger.com/index.php/post/1168/Interview_Iraqi_Prime_Minister_Nouri_Al-Maliki
The whole piece is an interesting Q&A that illuminates some of the intricacies of the plan.

Excerpt: The Prime Minister also said that the plan is mainly based on the principle of equality among all Iraqis without discrimination and that the government will leave no safe haven for the terrorists. He also pointed out to the initiation of a large purge in the army and police ranks, which has resulted in the expulsion of thousands of soldiers and officers in the past months, and he pointed out that it will continue until all these apparatuses are thoroughly purged from penetration.

Nouri Al-Maliki also said that the differences between American strategy in Iraq on the one hand and the government's strategy and its security plan that some people refer to on the other hand are not true. He said that the two plans are congruent with respect to the security aspect despite their differences in other aspects. He also maintained that he focuses on putting an end to the existence of armed militias and on transforming them into political organizations, referring to the large dialogue that has extended to armed factions belonging to former Baathists who requested joining the dialogue with the government.

Iraqi puppets have to clean house. They understand their own people and culture better than we do. It's obvious we can't,won't or refuse to understand their culture and its 'odd' and very diverse customs. We will abandon them in their sandbox if they don't take the reigns.

5. The numbers are going up so much faster now.
Lehrer used to have 4 or 5 on at the end of the program. Now the numbers are 12 and 15 and 17 each nite.

Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 01:41 PM by ohio2007
Our military should not be playing the role of cops. This is not their mission
They did accomplish their mission weeks after the invasion but this "winning the peace" is not their job.
