Couple awarded $1.5MM in hormone lawsuit (HRT's)
PHILADELPHIA - A couple who contended that a hormone-replacement drug caused the woman's breast cancer was awarded $1.5 million Monday in a jury verdict against drug maker Wyeth.

The jury also found that Wyeth acted with malice or reckless disregard, prompting a hearing set to start Tuesday on possible punitive damages.

The Philadelphia jury awarded $1 million in compensatory damages to plaintiff Mary Daniel and $500,000 to her husband, Tom, a courtroom clerk said.

Mary Daniel, 60, of Hot Springs, Ark., developed breast cancer after taking the Wyeth drug Prempro, a combination of estrogen and progestin, every other day for about 16 months to relieve hot flashes.

1. HRT in general...
serious issues.

Mainly, menopause is supposed to happen - it's a normal part of life that women have experienced since the dawn of time...

There are very few cases, imo, in which it is really warranted (though there are some certainly).

But, it's another part of society's "a woman isn't a woman unless she's birthin' babies" hang up...

Good for this couple, I hope she's well (need to read article still).

3. There are many natural herbs that can control
the symptoms of menopause which have been used for years before they figured out that pregnant mare urine would work.

First and foremost, only one of the five major arms of the WHI trial was terminated—that which involved Prempro®, a combination estrogen and progestin formulation consisting of conjugated equine estrogens and medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA). The estrogen plus progestin trial involved 16,608 women ages 50 to 79 years with an intact uterus.

Those of us who have been involved in research about the effects of hormones on the body were not surprised with the outcome. After an average follow-up period of 5.2 years, women who were on Prempro were determined to be at a slightly increased risk of developing invasive breast cancer, heart attacks and stroke.
