Astronaut arrested in bizarre love triangle

10:05 PM CST on Monday, February 5, 2007

Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An astronaut drove from Houston to Florida, donned a disguise and confronted a woman she believed was romantically involved with a space shuttle pilot she was in love with, police said. She was charged with attempted kidnapping and other counts.

U.S. Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak, 43, who flew last July on a shuttle mission to the international space station, was also charged with attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. She was denied bail.

Police said Nowak drove from her home in Houston to the Orlando International Airport—wearing diapers so she wouldn’t have to stop to urinate—to confront Colleen Shipman.

Nowak believed Shipman was romantically involved with Navy Cmdr. William Oefelein, a pilot during space shuttle Discovery’s trip to the space station last December, police said.

7. What a sad story
One would think astronauts have to pass some intense mental health exams but perhaps not.

10. Don't be such a grouch!
Believe it or not, I did a search with the code word of "astronaut" and didn't come up with anything before I created my thread. And then there was one that was created about twenty minutes after mine but you didn't see me complaining about it. Are you jealous that my thread receive a couple more responses than your's? :) Chill out!

24. The woman has had a mental "break"
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 06:24 PM by SoCalDem
Serious depression takes a toll on the looks too..

It's a "funny" story, but it really isn't. When one thinks of the education and personal drive it took for her to get to her position, it must have taken a real toll on her, and who knows what event "set her off". but that woman's having psychological problems..

I feel for her, having to go to court in EITHER of those two states.. I hope she's got a damned good lawyer.

19. No need to defend Texas, I'm here too.
I was gonig to put the true phrase "where else but Texas" but saw that she left Texas and traveled to Florida, so I just included Florida with the phrase.

Although we always used to joke, especially back in the pipeline construction days when the men outnumbered the women by about 10 to 1 -- "Alaska, where the odds are good, but the goods are odd."

We wouldn't want any cat fight distractions happening while some crewman is outside trying to repair the robotic arm, now would we.
