Court-Martial Begins for War-Resisting Soldier
By Mike O'Sullivan
Los Angeles
06 February 2007

A U.S. army officer faces up to four years in prison for refusing to deploy with his unit to Iraq, and for publicly criticizing the U.S.-led war in Iraq. VOA's Mike O'Sullivan reports the court-martial of First Lieutenant Ehren Watada, which started Monday at Fort Lewis, Washington, pits the right to free speech against the need for military discipline.

A 28-year-old native of Hawaii, Lieutenant Watada, volunteered for the army in 2003, after he finished college. He served in Korea, but facing deployment to Iraq, says he concluded that the U.S. role there is immoral and illegal. He offered to serve in Afghanistan, but refused to go to Iraq when his brigade was sent in June. He also spoke publicly against the war in Iraq.

3. Lt. Ehren Watada is doing what 70% of Americans want: End the Iraq War!
DON'T DO IT.
LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS.
DON'T GO.
SAY NO. AND THEN SAY NO AGAIN.
STOP FUNDING IT.
REMOVE ITS INSTIGATORS.
GET OUT!
NOW!

Lt. Watada represents the best of our country! He should be the one in the White House, not Bush and his puppetmaster.

Who should be in jail? Lt. Watada, or George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and the rest of the mass murderers and torturers and liars of this illegitimate government?

Things are UPSIDE DOWN.

5. Enjoy prison, bud.
In case you haven't noticed, Congress gave Chimpy the green light to go to war with Iraq. That green light, no matter how tarnished, is still lit. As much as we don't like it, Chimpy is the Commander-in-Chief, a.k.a. the Lieutenant's boss. How many of you here would tell your boss to go 'F himself because he told you to do something you didn't want to do? What he wanted you to do was perfectly legal, but you didn't want to do it. Such as the case here. The order to deploy would never be considered an illegal order by any court, and he does not have the right to pick and choose what front he goes to. He's a soldier.

I hope the media whore get the maximum sentence. He is one of the last people I would want to represent the anti-war movement. He does not deserve to be called a soldier. He is a coward of the worst sort.

Be careful defending this guy if you haven't served yourself. Otherwise you could be just as bad as those we love to label 'chicken hawks'.

6. Are you high?
Descent is, in my opinion, imperative when the marching orders are insane. To go back into the Iraq "conflict" after experiencing it is the definition of insanity.

Ones conscience dictates the difference between right and wrong. Watada is exercising his right, as a human being, to not carry out the insane orders of a war criminal. It is an immoral occupation of a country who wants us out. Watada told the DoD that he would go to Afghanistan but not Iraq... Hardly the act of a "chicken-hawk."
