Harvard Study: U.S. Nicotine Boost Was Deliberate

Excerpt:

In reports such as those generated by Harvard and the state, researchers look for trends while acknowledging that figures can fluctuate year to year. For instance, the Harvard researchers present data showing that inhalable nicotine in Marlboro brands generally trended upward from 1997 through 2005, although levels declined slightly in the last two years covered in the study.

In its statement, Philip Morris said, "There are random variations in cigarette nicotine yields, both upwards and downwards, and those variations are not consistent in either direction across reporting years."

Connolly and state health officials dispute that assertion, saying that their research shows a consistent upward trend.

The company also said, "Philip Morris USA agrees with the authors that cigarettes are addictive and harmful."

The Harvard researchers do not speculate in the study on how companies might have chosen tobacco with higher nicotine content, but veterans of the war on tobacco suggested possibilities.

They pointed, for example, to US government documents showing that in the 1980s one company, Brown & Williamson, bred tobacco in Brazil with twice the nicotine content of its standard product. Matt Myers, head of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said that companies can also manipulate nicotine levels by choosing parts of the tobacco plant known to have high concentrations of the addictive ingredient.

"The evidence is clear that the tobacco companies are capable of and do carefully regulate the level of nicotine in their products," Myers said. "The consistent increase over a period of years can't happen by accident."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just like the oil companies and their proteges are now putting forth a disinformation campaign about the climate crisis while trying to make people believe they are changing and actually care about the health of this planet, so are the tobacco companies LYING to Americans about their concern for their health. CIGARETTES KILL and cost Americans billions in healthcare and funeral costs a year and profits for these peddlers of disease and death and need to be shut down once and for all. They killed my parents, and they will kill your children if you give them the chance, just as EXXON would gladly kill them and this planet for 36 billion plus dollar profits every year. After reading this, I am not only outraged, I am sick.
2. This should negate the State Tobacco Settlements...Void and reopen them
With FDA regulation of nicotine levels being an nonnegotiable element of any new settlement.
They should be forced to pay for the costs of anyone now smoking the cigarettes with the manipulated nicotine levels.
Next, end ALL tobacco advertising. (all drug ads should be banned again, IMO)
Lastly, have the Dem Congress draft criminal penalties for scientists and board members of tobacco companies with jail time and asset forfeiture if they fiddle with nicotine levels, and have the law mandate a benchmark nicotine level that is lower than current.
5. Why can't it just be legislated that the nicotine be taken out altogether?
Edited on Tue Feb-06-07 11:39 AM by RestoreGore
I know I know, those poor tobacco company scumbags have to make a living somehow. And of course, nothing will ever happen to these companies in this toxic system where money means more than lives.
7. Wow, what an obviously good idea that has never occurred to me
Thanks.
Shove it in their faces.
Oh, ok Mr. Tobacco, cigarettes aren't addictive?
Fine. Then take out the nicotine or be regulated like a drug.
3. Anyone who doesn't think nicotine is a drug is a fucking idiot
and while smokers can go cold turkey or use the patch,
there is no cure for fucking idiots.
