Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey unbuttons his mind, dumps on DeLay, says Bush is a failure
By Dave Montgomery
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON _ When he was the GOP leader in a Republican-controlled House of Representatives, Dick Armey was never known to be a shrinking violet. But now that he's out of politics, Armey is indisputably even more plainspoken as the leader of a conservative grassroots network known informally as "Armey’s army."

Q. Did Tom DeLay become a liability to the party?

A. Oh yeah. I’m amazed at the number of people who tell me this. I have my own understandings and feelings about Tom DeLay. . . . I don’t believe he’s a good person and I don’t believe he is a person who should have been in public office.

Q. Why don’t you like him?

A. I don’t like sneaky, conniving people. I don’t like people who get behind closed doors and contrive against other people. (He) has had -- what’s the word I want? -- an aggressive tendency to create the opportunity to do back-door, behind-the-door, closed-door, dark-room contrivances against people. I just consider that unacceptable.

Q. Is George W. Bush a failed president?

A. I’ve said over the years that every president either ends up a pleasant surprise or a bitter disappointment. And we haven’t had a pleasant surprise since Ronald Reagan. I don’t see how anybody can look at the Bush presidency and say this was a success in public policy terms.

1. Better late than never, I guess... still I wonder how someone named
'Dick Armey' could oppose gays in the military.

He's still a very conservative guy.

5. Ah yes, another Texas rectum.
In Texas, he's known as "The Dick from Denton".

Denton is a college town NE of Dallas, with two fine universities: Texas Woman's University, and the University of North Texas, which is widely acclaimed as the best music school in the Texas State system. I still call it "North Texas State" because that's shorter.

9. I'm not excited. The reason he thinks Bush is a failure is probably...
that gas hasn't hit $5.00 and Exxon stills owns less than 50% of the planet.

11. His daughter is a great Dem
He's redeemed himself some, I think. He came out and said that it was important for dems to win the midterms, for one thing. I think he really wants to be an old school conservative, but you had to run with a pretty nasty crowd to be that in Washington recently. Well, guess you didn't *have* to...

His daughter told me that one thing that she really couldn't get her mind around, was that she was NOT raised in a household that had kneejerk opposition to abortion.

13. Coming from a man who spent most of his time in smoky back rooms he sure
sounds moralistic. Dick Armey is as sleazy as they come. He was also the one that stood on the floor of the House and said quite matter of fact ly that Clinton's Budget would destroy America. He said you could never raise taxes in the middle of a recession and claimed Clinton's Budget consisted of the largest tax increase in history. Every single Republican voted against it but fortunately Democrats had a majority in the House and had a Tie Breaker in the Senate in the form of Al Gore, Fortunately for the Democrats and America it passed and America went on to experience the greatest economic expansion in History and by the end of Clinton's term we actually had a surplus. Enter Bush* and his desire to undo everything Clinton. America experienced the greatest economic turn around in History and has been racking up debt faster than seems possible and Bush*'s cronies are laughing all the way to the bank...
