10. i'm sorry. i choose to evaluate true social commentary
not a 30 second 'spot' during some sporting event.

how about we discuss the merits?

26. How about we take the whole ad campaign into context and discuss
the merits of the players' reactions to the advertisement as a social commentary about the rampant and unchecked homophobia in professional sports?

35. I'm glad at least you see the value of what I said.
When push comes to shove, it's obvious some tend to offer nothing of substance. I guess the world's a joke and pertinent personal civil issues end up being meaningless. It's easier why you've got your hand dipped deeper in the pot.

It's a classic.

34. There's a difference between bigotry and
satire.

There's also a difference between mocking a situation and diminishing the feelings of those that are offended by it.

9. No, no no. Everyone knew Archie Bunker was the bigot and we
laughed at him because we WERE ALL in on the joke.

We WERE NOT laughing AT the groups he offended.

That's the difference between the show and the commercial.

Gay males were the butt of that Snickers joke.

14. Commercial vs. television sitcom...
Commercial-a media device utilized to SELL things, sometimes playing upon people's attitudes and feelings about social attitudes again to SELL THINGS.

vs.

A controversial (at the time) television show that satirized specific social mores, language, attitudes, etc. which was consequently DROPPED by advertisers for fear that people would not BUY their things.

Hmmmmm....a commercial trying to SELL versus a televsion show that lost money for it's networks television advertisers.

Sorry, I don't see the similarity. :)

17. Hmm, I don't know.
I seem to remember that for every person who realized Archie Bunker was satire, there were a bunch of rubes who thought he was political commentary.

28. No, I don't think it was 99%. Some people thought Archie always came out
the winner. And it was way more than 1%.

31. It was WAY MORE than 10%
Getting past the shallow public campaigns against "All In the Family" by Donald Wildmon and the like, of which most people were unaware, you can be sure that closer to half the viewers identified with Archie and took him at face value.

We see this a lot with satire, or perhaps I should say with language: it's variably interpretable.

18. when I was kid - I couldn't 'get it'
it seemed harsh and unpleasant - but my very liberal father, loved it - so we watched it. Now I *get* both the show and why he loved it and made us watch it. The cringe factor was intentional. Allowed for discussions on the show and about the show to talk about things that 'polite folks' just didn't often talk about out loud.

Thanks for posting.

and... :hi:

I would run to my room when it was on because I just couldn't take the cringe factor. I was all of 5 maybe?

I probably need to catch it on TV Land.

33. I haven't brought myself to watch the show currently
my reevaluation is based on rethinking what I saw (I was a few years older than you). But having read more about the show, and having watched the work Carroll O'Conner did afterwards ... perhaps I too need to seek out watching the old shows.

Hope all is well with you - be safe in this ugly weather. Who knows when it will be, but I look forward to the next time that we find ourselves at a gettogether. It was a pleasure meeting you. ! :hi:

And we ignore the hurt on the faces of those most dear to us.

25. Archie Bunker. I love that show!
He hated everybody. I remember one episode when Mike started wearing a book satchel. Bunker thought it was queer. All those years he called Mike the "meathead" when he was the actual meathead! I was overjoyed when I found out years later that the actor that portrayed Archie Bunker was really a liberal.

RIP, Carroll O'Connor

30. Yes, that show was genius
And nothing else ever came close. Why? Because all the imitators never really understood it. They thought it was a show about a bigot, and that's it. What it really did is show us all that all of us are bigots, in our own way.
