Bush just blamed the bridge collapse on "Democrats in Congress"
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 10:24 AM by Botany
Steph Miller just played his speech live. The man is without shame.

"They failed to pass the needed legislation and get it to my desk." rough quote

Impeach his ass NOW.

They haven't even gotten all of the bodies picked up and bush does this?

BTW Interstates are paid for w/ gas taxes.

19. Are You Quite Sure of That?
Are you quite sure of that? There are still a lot of right-wing Koolaid(tm)-drinkers out there who might have decided that invading Eye-Raq was a mistake, but who still nod and bob their heads when Banana Republicans and anti-tax activists like Grover Norquist start railing about the perils of "big gummint."

I very much want to believe that you're right and I'm wrong. The trouble is that I fear that too much of the American electorate STILL hasn't wised up to Republican/"conservative" folly, and won't wise up until after several more bridge collapses and a Hurricane Katrina-disaster or three pounds the bitter consequences of voting for "conservatives" into their ADD and addled brains. I hate to say it, but I think that it's going to take a few hundred MORE deaths before the lesson works its way through the dense cranial bone structure of the remaining reachable voters.

:grr:

Stupid is stupid, regardless of political affiliation. They can go back and forth on this all day, and at the end of the day it's still the STATE's responsibility to maintain that bridge, and they likely failed to do so.

29. Minnesota is run by a rabid tax-cutting Republican governor
who has been a big favorite of the Bushies and has often been mentioned as a VP possibility. If it was the state's fault, the blame can be dumped right in Pawlenty's lap, because he has consistently opposed any taxation for transportation infrastructure (or anything else, for that matter). Minnesota has deteriorated a lot under the administration of Timmy "The Tool" Pawlenty.

46. And with unfunded federal mandates being imposed on the states,
the states have to take money from infrastructure to pay for them.

I don't know how it is up there, but around here we've been out of the red for barely 18 months, after years of a devastated state budget. I am certain that there are structurally unsound bridges all across the state, that we have not have time or finances to do anything about. All because of the billions going to Iraq.

Shrub knew he'd get coverage if he was going to talk about the bridge collapse, and he did for a few minutes before doing an abrupt right turn and attacking Democrats for not passing spending bills.

So Mr. President, just how much did YOU have in there for repairing our nation's bridges and other deteriorating infrastructure and what did the Democrats want to spend?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Based upon what I heard on the news today, it appears that the bridge had a "non-redundant design" that had no margin for error. The main part of the bridge sat on 4 piers in a rectangle. If one pier failed, the bridge fell over.

of the rest of us that the policies they harbor have contributed to a collapse of not just this one bridge, tragic as it plainly is; but a collapse of the entire civilized world, and this is simply damage control on their part.

It's not time to impeach, it is time to throw them and their entire donor, fan & no-bid crony base into the prisons of this country.

55. President's Highway Funding Below Congressional Budgets
President's Highway Funding Level Well Below Those in Congressional Budgets --

For the federal-aid highway program, both the House and Senate Republican budgets were well above the President's budget. The President's budget provides $189.5 billion over the next six years, $17.6 billion less than the House Republican budget and $66.2 billion less than the Senate-passed budget. The President's funding levels are much lower because the Administration does not assume any increase in the federal excise tax on motor fuels or the use of general funds for highway aid.3 The Administration claims that its budget provides the maximum amount possible for the federal highway program within those constraints.

Federal Highway and Transit Aid, 2004-2009
(Budget authority in billions of dollars)

President's budget (CBO re-estimate) 189.5 45.7

58. Sounds like a little "partisan political theatre" heh???
If nothing else, it's going to solidify that his 24/7 political hardball lends credence to the USA firings for purely partisan political reasons. Anyone who was formerly full support but wavering is going to be sickened about him using the tragedy for political sport.

82. You Would Hope, Huh?
Just when I think the ethical behavior couldn't get any more reprehensible, he sinks to a new low. The deceased, the injured, and their families will be so comforted to know that they've now become trivialized into props for the President's little sleight-of-hand show. Don't look at the WH legal obstructions....look over here instead, look at what I say was caused the incompetence of Congress!

60. Looks like the funding was decided long before the Democrats took over:
Aug. 10, 2005:

"...And that's why I'm proud to be here to sign this transportation bill, because our economy depends on us having the most efficient, reliable transportation system in the world. If we want people working in America, we've got to make sure our highways and roads are modern. We've got to bring up this transportation system into the 21st century. I mean, you can't expect your farmers to be able to get goods to market if we don't have a good road system. You can't expect to get these Caterpillar products all around the United States if we don't have a good road system.

This road system that we have is going to be modernized through the Transportation Equity Act. It provides more than $286 billion over six years to upgrade our nation's network of roads and bridges and mass transit systems. The Transportation Act will finance needed road improvements, and will ease traffic congestion in communities all across this country."

Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 11:34 AM by Penndems
Whining, finger-pointing, lying and playing the political blame game while Minnesota and the entire nation are mourning.

Lower than low!

65. Bush just elected Al Franken
This is similar to FDR's knowing he was just elected prez after Hoover allowed the military to attack the Bonus Army Marchers in '32 in DC's Anacostia 'Hooverville' encampment.

68. We need more $200 million bridges to Nowhere, Alaska
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 12:00 PM by JPZenger
During the last highway bill, Senator Stevens (R-Insane) pushed for $200 million of Federal tax money for a highway bridge connecting to an island populated by 50 people. It would have been nice if that tax money had gone to replacing deficient bridges that are very heavily travelled.

78. Well, there's a shocker, NOT! He never misses an opportunity to pass blame, EVER!
Harry Truman would be appalled! The trillion he has passed on to his contractor bidness buds for his illegal war on Iraq, could have shored up the levies in NO, could have repaired our crumbling infrastructure and could have been used for alternative energy. But that wouldn't have made him and his corrupt bidness buds richer, now would it? Happy now, Freepers? Do you feel safer? Crumbling infrastructure and tainted food and whatever else your great leader has taken a pass on, in order to make us "safe". Yeah, he rocks! You are idiots! He screwed you and thanks to you, us, nine ways from Sunday.

79. He knows he's going to take a hit over this and he's trying to get out in front
of the controversy by flinging a little of his own monkey-poo. If the Democrats in Congress are worth anything at this point, they'll launch yet another investigation into a major Bush scandal about his failure to fund our homeland infrastructure the way ChimpCo previously failed to keep the New Orleans levees in a proper state of repair.
