During the Clinton years, there was some military person who made a stink
because he spoke out against his "Commander-in-Chief" ... and the reichwingers held him up as a hero (wish I could remember his name). Rather contrasting to how they feel about Watada, eh?

Plus, the reichwingers held the father of Randy Shugart to high esteem ... but crucify Cindy Sheehan for the same criticism ...

2. That one doesn't ring a bell, although I recall
that after re-election, the uberpatriots flew flags at half mast.

5. New refused to service under UN commanders.
Criticism of Clinton was only implied.

7. That's the one I was thinking about
I would bet good money that he had researched VERY CAREFULLY how to phrase his hatred of his C-in-C to make it look marginally "patriotic" ...

4. There's was a Marine major who got all snitty about Big Dog's
horsing around with La Monica. The reichwingers took him up as a cause celebre for a couple of days. Seemed BD's behavior was detrimental to service morale.:sarcasm:

There is an UCMJ article forbidding commissioned officers from publicly criticizing the Cinc, VPs, state governors. I never heard if major got slapped, probably not. Unforturately, I don't remember his name.

The right wingnuts work in hypocrisy like Michelangelo worked in marble.

6. There was Senator Jesse Helms, for example...
In 1994, when asked on CNN whether he felt Clinton was "up to the job" of Commander-in-Chief, Helms replied

"No, I do not. And neither do the people in the armed forces. Mr. Clinton better watch out if he comes down here. He'd better have a bodyguard."

It seems that Helms might've been liable under the Smith Act. Passed in 1940, it made punishable the advocacy of "the propriety of overthrowing or destroying any government in the United States by force and violence."

8. was it this guy?
Robert Patterson wrote a book called "Dereliction of Duty" in which he accused Clinton of being careless with the nuclear codes suitcase. It was the basis for a whole book about how Clinton was a danger to the country.

Ha. How different things look in retrospect.

Pentagon issues warning over anti-Clinton statements by military personnel

By Shannon Jones
21 October, 1998

Recent insubordinate remarks by military personnel about Clinton have prompted Pentagon officials to issue a warning against criticism of the president. Clinton has come under attack in both the Army Times and Navy Times, and through a Marine e-mail petition.

SNIP..

Recent attacks on Clinton include a column by Marine Major Shane Sellers in the Navy Times. Sellers declared, "One should call an adulterous liar exactly what he is--a criminal."

10. No, I'm pretty sure the one I was thinking about was Michael New
as noted above ... "refused to put on the uniform of the U.N." ... in other words, he refused to follow orders ... and the reichwingers were salivating at his "uniformed" ass ...

the military decided to take no real disciplinary action against this guy ...
