Dig the reasoning of this freeper re: why the crazy astronaut is in the news...
Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 12:14 AM by LittleClarkie
The media is going to town on the crazy astronaut because...

They're a bunch of lefties and they want to discredit conservative values. Same with the stories on teachers making it with students, priest pedophiles and the like.

So sayeth a caller on Rush today.

How do astronauts epitomize conservative values?

Can anyone explain this non sequitor to me please.

Funny they should mention it though. I've often thought that the frequent "teacher makin' it with their student" stories were a veiled attempt to discredit public schools so that parents would want to take their children to private schools or homeschool them.

On edit: it seems that folks thought I was asking the question "Why is the media going nuts on this story" when what I really wanted to do was point out the rather bizarre logic of this caller. Made my brain hurt, it did. Liberals attack astronauts because we hate morality. Alrighty then.

7. Pfffffttt.
Not to worry. I can't manage more than about 5 minutes at a time.

Besides, Rush wasn't on today. It was one of his minions.

I generally surf between a local Conservative dude, Rush, O'Reilly, then Ed Schultz and another local, but more middle of the road dude, with a few sports dudes thrown in.

I used to get Air America out of Cincinatti, but that changed to a sports radio station.

Just lookin' for some talk radio.

But even so, Rush has the opposite effect. He reminds me of why I'm here and why I'm a Dem. I ain't goin' noplace.

Personally I can't find this so called lefty press. CNN for instance seems pretty damned righty to me.

11. When will the damned liberals embrace conservative values?
values we all should share, like wearing diapers on an interstate car drive to try and murder your adulterous rival for your adulterous lover.

Damned liberals always trying to tear down the morals that make America great.

14. Funny, Fox and Friends spent a good 10+ minutes of each half-hour prattling on about the astronaut
Meanwhile the Washington Post had two stories on the front page dealing with Iraq and another story about how the distrust is hampering efforts by the FBI to reach out to Muslims.

To be honest, I haven't seen any channel give as much time to the NASA story as the conservative's beloved FOX News.

16. Astronauts = Superhumans
As a kid who grew up with the Mercury, Gemini & Apollo programs, Astronauts were true "heroes". They were built up to be the best of the best. The highest education...true leaders who explified all the best of our country. They were put on a pedestal with a flag and became symbols that were amplified by an over-zealous NASA PR department and a media that fawned over the technology. The last half of "The Right Stuff" opens a door to this idol worship and the real humans who had to live up to those expectations.

Today, women and minorities carry a double load when they are put on that pedestal. They not only are almost always singled out because of their gender or ethnicity and thus must be the best of the best of the best. They're "pioneers" who have had to face a lifetime of labels and stereotypes and surely have had to steel their emotions away in their quest to "prove" themselves.

I'm certain we're gonna hear a lot more about Ms. Nowak's life...more than we care to. But within it will be the seeds of a woman whose always had to "prove" herself and live up to the expectations of others. The fact it manifested itself in such obsessive and unusual behavior may be isolated, but it also wipes away the superman myth these people are built up to be...and one that lays for easy prey to the tabloids.

Also keep in mind that this story has "sizzle". There's elements of sex and perversity along with a love triangle and fame that is way too juicy for rating hungry cable news outlets to stay away from. They're drawn like a moth to a flame.

17. Sensational and weird - is why the astronaut is in the news
Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 01:25 PM by Tactical Progressive
Nothing more than that.

If there was some way to play it up in favor of Republicans or to smear Democrats with it, the media would. Like for instance if some Republican Congressman said it shows 'Liberal values', exactly like Newt Gingrich did, they'd be asking questions and taking polls like: 'Does the jealous astronaut incident show Liberal values?'. Or if some Democratic Congressman said it shows Conservative values they'd be asking questions and taking polls like: 'Are liberals using the astronaut incident to politically divide and weaken America?'. You know, questions that say more than they ask.

But there's none of that here, at least not yet.

As to the non-sequitor of freeper 'reasoning', well, isn't that kind of a rhetorical question? Right-wingers will always look for and find their victim mentality in any situation. They are bullies and cowards, and always the victim.
