Two new houses have been built, owners are very Republican minded fellows and both are wealthy. So, when someone has all that money, you imagine that their homes are a reflection of their dreams and fears.

First home is built like a fortress. Small windows, heavy concrete and brick on all sides. Even the porch has a brick fence-like border, as if to provide cover. Every inch of that house looks like this guy has more to fear than just hurricanes. My other neighbor and I have exchanged notes that maybe this guy knows something we don't. Does he?

Second home is much nicer construction, but it's a flag lot in a very secluded rural, but tame area. And on the top of his house, he has a crow's nest. It's obviously not a crow's nest like you see on a ship, but it's a small cylindrical tower that juts up about six or more feet from the roof. And when I was there, I happened to notice an ammo box on the floor. I'm thinking, WTF? These people freely admitted that they only watch Fox and won't watch any of the liberal stations.

Anyways, is anyone monitoring this? Are right-wingers being scared into thinking that we're going to be invaded soon?

And as far as "what they're expecting?".... it sounds to me that they are simply expecting the unknown. but in planning for the future I have thought that if things did get bad, dangerous in my neighborhood I would seek ways to protect myself from gun users. which may mean I would need a gun.

A solar-powered outdoor alarm system that will video-tape any movement in the yard, and if it falls within certain parameters, will wake me up so I can run to the control room. Then, with a joystick and computer screen, I'd love to be able to watch the prowler and determine if I need to send them a few laser shots. I just picture my thumb hitting the buttons on the joystick and watch the son of a bitch hot foot it off my property.

24. I own ammo boxes, too...not all contain ammo...

they're like $5 at the military surplus store, and they are airproof and watertight. We live in hurricane country, so I keep medicines, weather radio, etc. in a few of them (which are labeled as to their contents), and my tow chains are currently sitting in an ammo can as well. Easy to grab and throw in the trunk of the car if you have to evacuate from a bad storm, and everything will stay safe and dry. Most of ours do contain ammo, though (remember that half of gun owners aren't repubs...) :evilgrin:

I don't think you have to be a right-winger to think that a sturdy, hurricane-proof, defensible house is a good thing. The story of the Three Little Pigs comes to mind...

BTW, what area of the country do you live in? Might be a clue to what they're thinking (category 3 to 5 hurricanes are a real threat on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, not so much in Minnesota). I do know that the aftermath of the devaluation of the Argentine peso wasn't pretty (crime went through the roof, kidnappings, home invasion robberies, etc. skyrocketed, and having a "hard" house and guns was a Really Good Thing in some areas), and that may be on their minds due to the fact that the dollar is pretty vulnerable to a devaluation at the moment.

31. Don't be fooled; just because it looks like a fortress

doesn't mean it is. Wife and I are general contractors in South Florida. All new construction here is cinder block with some concrete. Cinder block has good wind resistance compared to wood frame, but is EASY to compromise with a 5lb sledgehammer. So, unless your neighbor built his house out of SOLID CONCRETE, it's not as much of a fortress as it looks.

Put the cynder blocks down, and then funneled in wet concrete into the holes. Then he put this black paint that someone said was a vinyl covering on the exterior of the house, and then he put bricks up.

It looks like a two story sororiety house. We're all assuming his house number will be displayed using the Greek alphabet.

isn't solid concrete, it is cinderblock with concrete "columns". There probably will be 2' to 4' gaps in between the "columns" that would be susceptible to sledgehammer. If he used cinder blocks and then filled all of them with concrete he is stupid. It would be cheaper and stronger to form and pour the walls with solid concrete. Another point is the sealant. He wouldn't need it if it his walls were solid concrete. He only needs it because his walls are mostly cinder block which is pourous. So, it sounds like your neighbor may have bought a false sense of security.

He hired some builder from out of state and I get the distinct impression that this guy went out of his way not to get "stuck" with any minority own contractors or subcontractors, if you know what I mean.

There is something very peculiar about all of it because the first thing the builder did was go to the next door neighbor and say, "Don't worry, there are no contractors here."

No clue what that means.

Oh, and a couple of guys came by last week and were wondering if you knew whether his crow's nest was armored or just wood construction, but you told them you weren't sure. Is there steel in there?
