MediaMatters: McCain and his blogger apparently agree: Chelsea Clinton is "ugly"
from Media Matters:

McCain and his blogger apparently agree: Chelsea Clinton is "ugly"

In 2004, a poster on the conservative website FreeRepublic.com using the pseudonym "Kerry Crusher" -- identified on FreeRepublic.com as blogger Patrick Hynes -- characterized Chelsea Clinton as "hideously ugly." The comment recalled a "joke" Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) reportedly told about Clinton in 1998: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." Hynes was hired by McCain's Straight Talk America political action committee in 2006. In addition to the Chelsea Clinton smear, "Kerry Crusher" also attacked McCain himself in 2004 as "a contemptable human being."

As Media Matters for America noted, The New York Times and Associated Press both reported Catholic League president Bill Donohue's criticism that two bloggers hired by John Edwards' presidential campaign are "anti-Catholic, vulgar, trash-talking bigots," without noting Donohue's history of vulgar, trash-talking bigotry, or his dismissal of anti-Kerry operative Jerome Corsi's anti-Catholic bigotry in 2004. Citing several of Hynes' controversial comments, blogger Glenn Greenwald argued on February 7 that the same standard the Times and the AP applied to Edwards and his bloggers should be applied to all candidates, including McCain:

So Donahue and people like Michelle Malkin have dug through the archives of the two Edwards bloggers -- Amanda Marcotte and Melissa McEwan -- and found bad words and posts that they claim are offensive. I do not know of many bloggers, or citizens generally, who do not have some views that would be offensive to large groups of people and who periodically express those views in less than demure ways, but if that is going to be the standard, we ought to apply it universally to all bloggers who are affiliated with political campaigns.

Hynes, a blogger for the conservative AnkleBitingPundits.com, has been identified multiple times on FreeRepublic.com as "Kerry Crusher" and apparently posted several messages on the site under that name. According to a December 28, 2004, FreeRepublic.com entry: "Patrick Hynes, a freeper whose screen name is Kerry Crusher is scheduled to appear on Hannity and Colmes tonight." .....(more)

7. Chelsea is beautiful
She was an at "that age" when her Dad was President for crying out loud! Who looks good at that age?

Besides, it isn't relevant. One thing the freeps have going around in their email chain is this thing "Why Men are Republicans" and it has photos of leading Democratic women. But the freeps are so stupid they tip their hand by doctoring the photos to make the women "ugly." They don't even realize that if they have to doctor the photos to make the women ugly, the women must not be ugly to start with.

Typical of the right to bring up such a ridiculously irrelevant thing.

Where they look goofy. It's just a part of growing up. It's sad that the media felt it was okay to mock her looks. She did grow up into a classy looking lady, and probably a lot stronger due to all the heartless people who picked on a teenage girl.

It's a shame we have to share the world with them but it has been on my mind lately that what the Tao says makes sense. We know beauty in the world because there is ugliness. Good and bad exist side by side. That's the way of things.

I have to accept that but I don't have to spend much time in the realm of freeperdom. It is ugly and sick and so I stay away most of the time. It will not go away.

Here's the pertinent info from an old Salon story about how McCain dumped his disabled first wife for hot lil' Cindy.

http://archive.salon.com/mwt/feature/2000/03/06/carol/index.html

"... It seems that McCain, who had once revealed to fellow prisoners of war in Vietnam that he wanted to be president, was restless in 1979. As Navy liaison to the Senate, he didn't have the career momentum he had counted on to propel him into an admiralty and on to the White House. He was 42, mired in stifling ordinariness. (Civilians call it "midlife crisis.")

" But McCain was making bold career moves on the home front, hotly pursuing a 25-year-old blond from a wealthy Arizona family -- while married. Carol, his wife at the time, had once been quite a babe herself apparently, until a near-fatal car accident (while her husband was in Vietnam) left her 4 inches shorter, overweight and on crutches. The couple had three children, whom Carol cared for alone while her husband was in Vietnamese prisons.

" McCain's strategy worked perfectly: After chasing Cindy Hensley around the country for six months, he closed the deal late in the year, had a divorce by February and was married to Hensley shortly thereafter. Bingo! McCain was a candidate for Congress by early 1982, his coffers full, his home in the proper Arizona district purchased. ..."

It's disgusting, low & contemptible to pick on Chelsea, who was never elected to anything. When her father was elected for the first time, she was around 13. Most girls go through an awkward stage then! And look at her now....pretty & accomplished. Why should she care what anyone thinks?

I find it wrong to pick on First Ladies or First Children, unless their actions warrant it (even though I'll bash Laura's lack of fashion sense at times.)

36. Chelsea Clinton Is Beautiful
Not only is she lovely, she is intelligent and compassionate. Her parents should (an no doubt are) very proud of her. It's indicative of how shallow McCain is that he would allow any kind of attack on her. I am so very tired of the right making fun of women's looks. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds. The Bush kids are off limits but yet right wing blow hards feel justified in attacking a woman and or photoshopping a liberal because it gives them their sick jollies.

Kerry's daughters were targeted and the stupidity of the attacks knew no limits.
Kerry's daughter
One a producer
One studying medicine

Clinton's daughter
A scholar, never in rag magazines because she knows how to conduct herself

Bush babies
Party hearty
Drug problems
Arrests

And the right keeps doing it.

As far as the repugnican women pictured I admit I am a hypocrite. I laughed but in my own paltry defense I really try not to get into the fray. I wish someone could explain to me where we draw the line. I get livid when I see the comments about Chelsea, Pelosi and other democratic woman and my first impulse is to retaliate but what purpose does it serve?

Slightly off topic but I wouldn't mind seeing Chelsea on the campaign trial...I wonder if that's something she would be interested in doing.

Now on topic: I find it bizarre that freepers and McCain choose to hold on to the image of an awkward preteen instead of seeing Chelsea for the woman she is today. It tells a lot about how they view women in general I think.

Someone dig up a pic of McCain when he was 12 so he can realize how ridiculous and petty all of this really is.

45. Why would any woman with self-respect vote for this man?
How low does your self-esteem have to be to vote for a man who would even consider telling a joke like that? Here he is, a senator, and he tells a horrid joke about a young woman? A woman who has never done anything to him personally? A woman who has conducted herself, despite being inside a pressure cooker for most of her teen years, with grace and dignity?
Chelsea has more class than McCain will ever understand.
Women who defend him on this, and who find the joke harmless, are difficult to understand. Rightwing women must always be laughing nervously at the expense of other women...they're just so glad they're not the targets. I wish they had some pride.

anyone who stoops to making personal attacks are not only ugly, but they have lost the point of their argument--if they ever even had one--and thus must resort to the tack of an ill-bred scoundral by attacking something no one has any control over: their looks.

It reeks of school yard bully behavior: and the one who engages in such tactics are usually so hyper-sensitive that they can't take what they dish out.

61. Republican MEN are Ugly
McCain, Newt, Rudy, Cheney, the Chimp, etc., etc., etc., even down to the stuffed shirt, mannequin type, "younger" Republican men of the Hannity mold.

What is good for the goose, is good for the gander.

70. As a third generation Democrat and straight woman, I agree!!
Republican hunks: None. Poppy Bush was nice looking when he was younger but Barbara has always looked matronly (to put it politely). I just about get post traumatic stress going down the cereal aisle and seeing her!

Democratic hunks: Gore, Clinton, JFK, FDR, Edwards, Clark, Chris Dodd when he was younger, Kerry, Webb (just noticed him in his answer to the STFU speech).
And they're smart too!!! Hunks must have brains as well as looks.

BTW, I have a button that says "I ONLY SLEEP WITH DEMOCRATS" but my boyfriend is worried about that plural. I guess he's afraid some other godless liberal will steal me.

62. Ok can we all get together and go kick Hynes ass
or maybe the secret service will do it for us

One could trip him and then maybe his face could accidently hit a large brick wall, a couple of times.

64. Insane McCain is at it again, hmmm?
Wonder how his campaign is going to cover for his frequent meltdowns?

I personally believe Ms. Clinton is lovely, intelligent and probably destined for great things. I've had the following photo in my Politics file for a while - I think it reflects true family values, unlike those of most neocons:

66. Comments from someone who knew Chelsea
My brother is a military guy. Typical repug. follows Fox News, etc etc. He worked in the White House while Clinton was there (it was a military thing). He thought Pres. and Mrs. Clinton were ok (he was a "good soldier"), and really did not like their politics. But he thought the world of Chelsea Clinton. Said she was incredibly intelligent, kind to the staff, thoughtful, and full of empathy and compassion for others, including those suffering in the 3rd world. One time there was some kind of bomb scare or something on a plane and he said that this young woman - 15 or 16 years old - was scared to death and yet wanted to make sure everyone else was ok before she left the premises. She was worried about the people protecting her because they had kids and she did not want them hurt. Every time my brother spoke of Chelsea, you could see how highly he thought of her. "She's really a good kid" he kept saying. Meanwhile I thought - now there's the president I hope we get one day.

Compare that to the Bush girls. Gross.

71. well, let us take a look at Mr. Hynes ...

That's right, this man hasn't had a date he hasn't had to mail away for since ... well, ever. Not even the Shrub Coors
Calendar Girl twins would give this loser the time of day.

McCain is a pig, so it's hardly surprising coming out of him.

Anyway, Chelsea is brilliant and beautiful, something unknown to the far-right, so it's natural they'd be jealous.
