Police chief says department targets Hispanics

ENID NEWS AND EAGLE (ENID, Okla.)

ENID, Okla. — Enid Police Chief Rick West said his department plays no role in targeting Hispanics to help U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deport those in the United States illegally, as an e-mail sent Monday night to community leaders claims.

The e-mail in question, written by pastor Jacob DeSouza, of Enid’s Davis Park Christian Church, claims “police” have been involved in raids, deportations, road blocks and the arrest and deportation of a Hispanic teen.

West said the e-mail is not true, and he is concerned about relationships the department has built within the community.

“I understand the sensitivity of this issue and the fear it can impose in the Hispanic community,” West said.
