Socialized medicine...socialized medicine...socialized medicine...
Say it a few times. Is it really such a bad thing? The rethugs and neocons have done a pretty damned good job of making "socialized medicine" a taboo word, just like they did with the word "liberal" awhile back. I'm proud to say that I believe firmly in socialized medicine. Take the power away from the big money insurance companies, whose primary goal is to turn a profit for their shareholders. WE THE PEOPLE should be the "shareholders", not a group of people whose $$$ depends on denying people of basic, sometimes lifesaving health care. There is something fundamentally wrong with a society that has tremendous amounts of wealth, and yet so many people can't afford basic medical care.

2. Fact is...
... we’ve already got socialized medicine. It’s called Medicare, and it’s absolutely astounding how the subversive evils of socialized medicine for people aged 64 years, 364 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds are magically transformed into a sacred entitlement program when the clock ticks one more time.

4. don't be overstating your case, though

Really. What you're talking about isn't socialized medicine, it's socialized health insurance.

Long form: universal public health insurance. Universal single public payer, if you opt for one-tier, no parallel private tier.

Socialized medicine implies that the health service providers are themselves employed by the state. That isn't the case in many places where health insurance is socialized, e.g. Canada.

No point in shooting yourself in the foot for no reason! I'd stick to public, a word that is nearly as reviled in the US as socialist, granted. ;) And to talking about health insurance, since that's what it really is.

5. Dems need to attach it to Social Security as often as possible.
Socialized Medicine is no different than Social Security. If they don't want you to have Socialized Medicine, then they feel the same way about your Social Security.

6. We all know the fucking French fly over by the plane loads to take advantage of our SUPERIOR system.
Edited on Fri Aug-10-07 07:36 PM by Selatius
Our system is so good with loading medical debts upon people who fall ill and denying care to people with pre-conditions and those who are too old that the damn French come to America to remind themselves how shitty Americans really have it and how good they have it back home in France.

When people come to witness how you perform just to cut through the disbelief that it can't possibly be like that in America, you know you're doing damn fucking good.

The World Health Organization lists France as being the world's greatest nation in terms of quality of health care, but it's lonely at the top, so they'd rather come down out of the clouds and hang with America, which ranks a paltry 37th in the world--two spots ahead of Cuba, a nation crippled by four decades of economic embargoes.
