Wikipedia Can Be So Quick To Update
Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 04:17 PM by OrangeCountyDemocrat
The moment I saw the first post here about Smith's death, I went to the Wikipedia entry for her, and it had already been updated with her date of death, as well as information on where and "how" she supposedly died.

Gotta love how accurate that site really is, even though it's not supposed to be actual "fact."

I should add that this was in the first few seconds after the story broke, and before the networks were officially saying she was dead, so Wikipedia had the facts seemingly before the media did.

1. Isn't that a bit unnerving?
Vultures out there ready to pounce on any bit of bad news so they can update a piece of crap website.

2. How Is It A Piece Of Crap Website?
I think it's cool that I was able to go there and immediately confirm a story before the media even did.

5. When London was attacked in 2005 wiki was on the case
and had the latest updates- far quicker and more accurately than garbage in the so called "mainstream" media. In fact, I was relaying info to my British friends- who weren't sure what was up.

10. The very thing that makes it useful makes it less than reliable.
The fact that there is limited editorial control makes it easy to manipulate information. There is little accountability ... few checks and balances on truth. Who are the authors? Who are the authorities? A collection of pseudonyms? A bunch of IP addresses?

3. What a baseless and senseless accusation
Wikipedia is an excellent resource for non-political topics, and those 'vultures' are just as quick to announce any breaking news. Tour de France winners, births from celebrities, congressional bills, etc etc etc.

4. She's this generation's Monroe
Face it, she pretty well duplicated the story of the poor kid in nowhere land growing up to be a beauty and trying to parlay that into a career. Both were dismissed as bimbos and never were able to escape that name. Monroe had more success in film; Smith had more success in pageants and modeling. Both died young and under (so far) mysterious circumstances.

Monroe's death was a huge story at that time, and Smith's death will be a big story now.

I'm not surprised Wiki was updated so quickly.

6. IMO that is one heck of a stretch
Other than the fact they were both bleach blonds. Monroe could act, Smith could marry rich old guys.

11. No, the part about Stern being with her. He wasn't.

Although I'm also skeptical of just what his status was and to what degree he, too, exploited her.
