Fred Thompson????? For God's sake, why?

What in the world is there about Fred Thompson that makes him so attractive to the GOPers? He was once a lobbyist. Big deal. A lot of people were once lobbyists but that sure does make them into Presidential material.

He was also a one term U.S. Senator. The key words......."one term." He was no big deal as a Senator and never became a two term Senator.

Now, he was also an actor. He was on the TV series Law and Order and a few movies including Hunt For Red October., So what? How does THAT make him presidential?

So, what the hell is the big deal about Fred Thompson? Are the GOPers frothing over his trophy wife? He's got a grouchy face, he mumbles and I cant understand him. He's also bald but since I am too, I wont fault him for that.

And ever since he began to tease the country about running, he has yet to say anything to make the populace sit up and take notice.

lazy - about 2:00 in the afternoon while he was in the senate would be the time to go home....makes you wonder.

When he announces next month, we'll see if he stands up to GOP scrutiny.

He's a simple person, easy to fool probably. Trophy wife...right, he must have to use something for her. Face it, all the GOP has is a bunch of losers.

18. It cracks me up that they think he's "authentic." Of course he seems authentic,
he's an actor. He's been trained by his job to make his body language and his facial expressions and his tone of voice and words all convey the same message. It's the absolute opposite of "authentic," just like Reagan, who was able to convey a "warm" persona while passing mean and nasty laws.

7. I think the attraction with Freddie is the same reason people
tend to like the neighbor's yard better, or their house, cars, clothes, etc. They aren't really crazy about what they currently have, so the other stuff looks better. The old grass is always greener (until you get to the other side).

I suspect if and when Freddie decides to jump into the poll, his flaws will be pointed out, and lots of people who THOUGHT he was the one they wanted will decide he's not quite what they thought.

31. That's pretty standard for Dems to feel that way. Think back to
past years. Not the ones where your option was to re-elect someone like BC, but before that. I can go back as far as Kennedy, and YES I DID really LIKE HIM! I didn't really like ANY of the candidates, and voted for the Dem because I liked the Pub LESS!

With the Pubs it's different. They've always had a heir apparent so they KNEW what to do. NOW they actually are supposed to think and make a decision, and the're just lost with that.

McCain is done. That leaves Romney and Rudy. Some rethugs understand they are bad candidates and so they are looking for someone else. Thompson is someone else.

or, at least, would be sent from central casting to play one.

We like our leaders to by bigger than life - look at the average height of our presidents. We like to imagine them on a horse back and chopping wood. In the old days we liked to imagine them wearing uniforms and actually see battle..

as in an aide drove Freddie off in a red pickup truck and then, once out of sight, Freddie got out and got behind the wheel of his luxury car. Oh, and got caught by the people leaving the event he spoke at. Whoops.

27. IMHO
it is simply that he is 'moldable' for public perception. Most
people reconize him as the actor, not even knowing that he was
a lobbyist and politican at one time. He is ripe pickins for the
GOP PR spin machine. His image is very malleable at this point, many
of the repukes see what they wish for in a candidate in Fred simply
because he has not defined himself on issues.

35. Why Not? Was Regan Presidential?
He had no qualifications and someone how managed to get elected. I honestly believe it was because he could act the part. Movie stars work very well for the GOPers. The name brand is already established.

The proof is in the pudding, they don't require a whole lot of talent or experience, look who's in there now.

But Reagan's daddy didn't get him the job. Reagan was qualified to be President, resume-wise. I'm not saying he was a good President.

42. Frankly, Thompson scares the hell out of me ...
First of all - my recollection is that Thompson didn't run for re-election to the Senate because he promised to abide by term limits when he took office (2 terms ... finishing Gore's term, and then his own). I could be wrong on that, though.

Frankly - Thompson scares me to death. Yes - he's a D-List actor and an empty suit ... but so was Reagan. He's got that good 'ol boy southern charm thing that will play well in the South. He's got the macho look and voice that will play well with most men, and some women. He's pretty quick witted and good with one-liners and soundbites, which will make him a formidable debater and good in commercials.

Ronny Reagan, as much of an empty suit as he was, was a disaster for liberals and Democrats. He was folksy and likeable, even while simultaneously supporting legislation that was downright evil.

Thompson is the same way. His obnoxious little response to Michael Moore's debate challenge played fairly well in the media, and made him look simultaneously likeable and condescending to Moore ... "a mental institution, Michael ... that's something you ought to think about."

I wouldn't underestimate this guy ... he came from a 20-point deficit to win his Senate seat, and he just hired the campaign manager that did it for him (the one that came up with the red pickup truck last time around).
