Still standing...
Edited on Sun Aug-19-07 08:28 AM by Texas Explorer
The Deutsche Bank building burned for five hours but, according to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, there is "no danger" of the building collapsing as was the official determination in the twin World Trade Center collapses on September 11, 2001.

The fire broke out on 14th and 15th floors yesterday afternoon and spread to several floors before it was brought under control about five hours later. The building had been heavily damaged by falling debris of the twin towers when terrorists flew hijacked planes into them, was being 'deconstructed' to make way for construction of Freedom Tower.

Two FDNY fire fighters were killed while trying to douse the blaze. FDNY firefighters Robert Beddia and Joseph Graffagnino, had been trapped and inhaled a great deal of smoke, Bloomberg said. Beddia, 53, had been a firefighter for 23 years; Graffagnino, 33, had been a with the department for eight years, officials said. Both had been involved with rescue efforts on 9/11.

"Our city's worked hard to recover from that awful day in September almost six years ago, and today's sad events have extended the sacrifice the city and the fire department has made," Bloomberg said Saturday.

The blaze began about a dozen floors up and burned on multiple floors at the building. Several other firefighters were taken to hospitals with smoke inhalation, but their injuries weren't serious, Bloomberg said. No civilians were hurt.

The 9/11 Commission report states the cause of the collapse of World Trade Center I and II was intense heat from the fire weakening support structures. However, this building burned more than twice as long. Why do you suppose this building would remain standing after five hours of fire? It seems to me that burning skyscrapers before 9/11 survived fire and this one shows that buildings after 9/11 fail to collapse from fire. Seems that the terrorists knew exactly which day in history was the one day when not one but two skyscrapers could be felled by fire. All they needed to do was figure out how to start them burning.

Your thoughts before this post is shuffled off to the 9/11 dungeon?
