A brain is made up of neurons that send electrical signals back and forth between them. Somehow this gives rise to consciousness, or so the materialist's theory goes. But who says it has to be biological neurons that switch the signals around. It could be sophisticated silicon neural network chips or even some kind of interstellar networks of electrically charged plasma. Who's to say that a huge network of plasma couldn't posses enough data processing complexity to be conscious and intelligent? We might, in fact, be looking at a picture of a sentient being made of plasma. Even the most materialistic of physicists has to admit that a sufficiently complex switching network could be conscious. If they deny that conclusion then they are denying that consciousness arises from such a network in the brain. So either consciousness is something mystical that is not a byproduct of a sufficiently complex data processing device, OR such an interstellar network could be conscious. To deny dualism, that consciousness has any kind of non-physical special status is to admit the possibility that consciousness may arise in networks other than human brains.
