Why can't we just vote with our modems?
Would it be too much trouble, or make things too balanced to permit people to vote online, just like they shop and pay bills?

Come on, we're in the twenty first frikkin' century here.

2. I think it would allow more people to vote, rather than exclude them.

Secure is not secure if the guys on the other end throw your vote in the trash.

5. Hell, they are trying to get control of the internet now, they don't like
all of the freedom, such as the bloggers, us being able to have access to all of the news such as in London. They would have to figure out how to control the voting first. Probably would make Karl Rove the man in charge of internet voting.

8. How are you going to keep a secret ballot
plus make sure everything is counted correctly and available for recount?

This has all the problems of those rotten voting machines.

Paper ballots, counted by human beings. It's the hardest to rig and the easiest to check.

9. As far as I'm concerned
it's been conclusively proven that although we may have high-tech tools, the humans using them are
defective.

We're in the 21st century being led by Neanderthals.

13. Problems with voting on-line are not just about technology
The idea behind the secret ballot is that no one will know for whom you are voting. This seems like a simple concept and should be easy to guarantee on-line. However, think for a minute about the individual voter voting at home if they are in a situation where they are living with someone who is very domineering and wants to dictate how they should vote among other things--note: I fully recognize that they are in more trouble than just being able to vote for the candidate or issue of their choice--Many spouses tell their partner how to vote, but when the vote is secret and the voter goes into the booth there is no way for anyone to know how they voted including the dominant partner. If voting is done at home or whatever there is no guarantee that someone is not looking over the voter's shoulder and telling them how to vote. This is also a problem when extending the use of absentee ballots as well. I agree that there are things we could do to extend the time allowed for voting like having the election last for 2-3 days instead of just 1 day. I strongly believe that we should go back to paper ballots and if it takes longer to count them so be it! I have worked at the polls for 20 years so I know how much time that would take but it would be worth it.

16. The same reason we don't vote on weekends.
The Republicans want to suppress voter turnout.

If everyone voted they wouldn't stand a chance, but if you make it difficult to vote, suppress the turnout, intimidate voters, disenfranchise minorities, and generally game-the-system to destroy voter confidence they are still a viable party.
