India Considering Shipping Stray Dogs to Korea for Soup
Source: Short News/Germany

08/20/2007 10:50 AM

India: The New Delhi City Council is considering several solutions to the continuing problem of large number of stray dogs roaming the streets. One solution would have the dogs drugged so they would not create a traffic hazard.

Under another proposal dogs would be shipped to Korea to be used in soup. Dog meat is a popular soup ingredient in that country and Bosintang, a traditional South Korean soup, has it as a primary ingredient.

The soup is supposed to be made from purpose-bred dogs but examples of this tradition not being followed have been found by animal rights groups and journalists. Eating Bosintang is traditionally thought to enhance one's virility.

6. Americans aren't too good about getting
their dogs spayed and neutered...how can we expect India to do a better job than is being done here?

Here in Missouri barely a week has gone by this summer where dogs are not being rescued from a puppy mill or a horder. It's sad. If these dogs can be used in South Korea then I say more power to India. It makes me sick to think of eating a dog but it makes vegetarians sick to think of people eating a cow and a chicken.

5. Sounds Like A Reasonable Solution.
As much as the thought disgusts me, I also have to understand that there are other cultures that are different then mine. In korea dogs are not regarded in the same way as we do here and that's ok. It's their culture and they're entitled to it same as we are to our chickens. So since they need dogs for their recipes anyway, I don't see the harm in India solving their problem in such a way. At least the dogs will be put to good use.

8. beats Nepal's solution...
Back in 2000 I think it was, Nepal was gearing up for a big tourism marketing campaign - only problem was the packs of stray dogs roaming the streets of Kathmandu - to the point where it was dangerous to go out at night. The govt's solution was to set out poisoned meat - so instead of stray dogs the tourists were greeted with dead and decomposing dogs, cats, birds, and even a few people on every street corner and alleyway.

duh!

9. Michael Vick's endorsement career is saved!
Donovan McNabb endorses real soup, so why not? (cue "Who Let The Dogs Out?") "This is Michael Vick. After another crushing loss to the Saints, I like to relax with a nice hearty bowl of Bosintang soup. Woof! That's good!... Bosintang soup. Now in terrier and retriever flavors!"

(need I even add, :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm: ?)
