DO YOU LOVE AL GORE? THEN EDUCATE YOURSELF FOR KRISSAKE!
Edited on Thu Feb-08-07 11:16 PM by Harper_is_Bush

Edit: old title "RE: IPCC REPORT - THE IMPORTANT BITS" wasn't generating interest. That made Al unhappy, thus a new title.

I've been watching with great interest all of the denier BS that's been flying around since the IPCC report came out.
They are claiming some pretty stupid and immoral things, including that no matter what we do to reduce C02 global warming will continue. This is a dangerous half-truth (surprise). It's true that there are GW inputs in the pipeline that have a long atmospheric shelf-life and will keep warming the world for decades, but the important fact is that what we do now will GREATLY reduce the effects of global warming.

Here's the small portion of the IPCC Summary for Policymakers ( http://www.ipcc.ch/SPM2feb07.pdf )that you need to know. It shows the significant differences in temperature and sea level rise depending on our actions starting now:

This graphic from page 13 shows the likely temperature and sea level ranges over the next century based upon different human contributing scenarios.

Below are the scenarios referenced above explained in terms of our real-world behavior (from page 18):

It's also important to realize that these numbers are conservative because they don't include possible feedbacks or increases in ice breakage/flow (from page 14):

There you have it....just a small portion of the summary which should tell people all that they need to know in order to appreciate how important it is for us to act now.

All of the human suffering you see on the earth today will pale in comparison if we allow as much as a 6C. temperature increase this century, as is within the likely range for an A1F1 scenario.

The time to act is now!

I've said it before and will say it again, he can do so much more for this all-important cause if he doesn't run for Prez.

round of kudos.

However, I can't imagine him attending the February 25 Academy Awards ceremony. But I certainly could be wrong on both counts.

Thanks for the interesting post.

22. No, I don't
Not after seeing firsthand how toxic this process is, what is going on in Congress, and how certain elements do not seem sincere in their support in seeking solutions, but just calling on him to do the work for them. All they do is scream run Al run! and oh please, save us! as if they are helpless. It is absolutely embarrasing to me, and I also think disrespectful to him in light of his words and the fact that he has a mind of his own, and also because action on this takes precedence. After supporting this good man for 18 years and being disappointed by that system more times than I can count, reading his books, and actually listening to his words and caring about what he has to say on an issue dear to my heart all of my life as well, I see what he is doing and I think it is absolutely brilliant and I do not want it to end.

And no, the presidency of this country is not the be all end all to me anymore, because you cannot legislate morality and responsibility and that is exactly what we now need to make progress on this moral issue. My guess is that for many to support such an immense global effort is simply too much for some, so they think that by just saying run Al run that is easier for them. Well, I have also read the reports, seen the photos, studied its affects, and come to my own conclusions on this, and there will not be ANY concrete progress made in this backbiting politically motivated Congress at all on this issue until people from the ground up through municipal, local, and state governments in all fifty states reach the point where this crisis becomes the urgent MORAL issue in their lives that it must become in order for a true seachange to happen.

If every state passed comprehensive legislation that addresed it NOW, who needs Bush or any President to sit as figureheads of a military industrial complex that will just find other priorities at the last minute to shove this aside again? To even sign a piece of paper that means nothing without the moral backing it needs to succeed is a waste of time. I think Al Gore is a visionary man who is finding innovative and effective ways to get this message out NOW to bring about that moral seachange, and I support him because of that and because of how he is going about it. He is far above a president to me and needs no title in my view to change things and influence events if we help him, and for me THAT is the most important thing right now after seeing this in the shadows for far too long. To see it reduced to a simple partisan political sound bite would be heartbreaking to me now.

10. But how do you factor in sheer ignorance?
That's the main reason we're still shouting at each other and not getting anything done.

One thing's right.

Education is the key.
