Breast Cancer Society rejects donation from exotic dancers.
Exotic dancers' 'stigma' too much for charity

The Breast Cancer Society of Canada has rejected the offer of thousands of dollars from a fundraising group of exotic dancers in Vancouver.
Exotic Dancers for Cancer holds an annual charity event in memory of a former dancer who lost her life to the disease. Last year, the event raised $6,000.

However, former dancer Trina Ricketts said the society sent her an e-mail declining the money this year, because its major donors did not support a connection to exotic dancers.
She says the society has taken the group's contributions in the past.

"I really feel that it's a strong indication of the degree of the stigma that exotic dancers experience when an organization doesn't even want to be associated with them for fear of experiencing the same stigma."
Ricketts said her group is still looking for a cancer charity that will accept a donation. The annual event will be held next month at a downtown hotel.

Agree/disagree with BCSC? I say they should have taken the donation.

2. Of course they should have!
I think it's great that these dancers are involved in such an effort. I don't see why it could possibly be defamatory to accept money from them. It's not like they're blogging for the BCSC, or going on speaking tours. Jeez.

4. Too bad...But they couldn't take the money.
Their obligation is work on breast cancer, so they are obliged to do whatever will make more money for that cause, which means backing the major doners. But I wish the major donors weren't so uptight! :)

5. How about this:
If the group really cares about finding a cure for breast cancer (and I have no reason to believe that they don't), they should change their name to something innocuous (like Working Women for Cancer) and resubmit the donation.

7. Right, and there's other venues where they can help this cause...
There are mobile and community clinics, education funds, perhaps even adding their donations together to get their organization some group health plan that will support preventative treatment and public education for this and other diseases that threaten women.

Oh, and I have to say this too: "boobies" *snicker*

8. What a horrible thing to do...
These women raised money for charity. Clearly, they are hurting
for their friend who lost their life to cancer.

And these hoity-toitey jerks rejected the money?

That is one of the most crass things I have EVER heard.

Gee, I hope during the next breast-cancer walk---the ACS has representatives
who are there--ensuring that all women who are participating meet their
socioeconomic and lifestyle criteria.

That just really sucks.

To me that screams, "We care about EVERYONE who has breast cancer--unless of
course we deem that you're a trollop."

Bad PR move. Bad moral move.

9. This made me think of the character 'Belle Watling' from "Gone with the Wind"
Too bad the 'good' ladies of The Breast Cancer Society of Canada don't recognize real 'goodness' and genuine advocates for the well-being of their cause when they see it.

---------
Belle Watling - Played by Ona MunsonMadam of an Atlanta brothel. A kind, no-nonsense woman who maintains self-respect despite what other people think of her, Belle loves her son and has sent him away to keep him from the vices of her profession. Belle respects and admires Melanie, cares deeply for Rhett, and works to look out for their best interests.

11. "Exotic Dancers for Cancer" is a horrid name....
But their $$$ is as honestly and hard earned as any other group. They should be allowed to have their names listed among the donors.

13. I couldn't agree more
They should call themselves "Exotic Dancers against Cancer".

This pisses me off as much as the Red Cross refusing donations from the Dixie Chicks.

15. what a sad catch 22 the Breast Cancer Society was placed in...
i wonder if someone suggested on the down low that the strippers split the raised funds among the members and donate individually. that should get around the problem. but it's sad that some larger foundation is playing hardball to keep them out.
