An inconvenient rush

Thousands out of luck as Gore talk sells out in minutes

Feb 08, 2007 04:30 AM
John Goddard
staff reporter

Overwhelming demand for tickets crashed the University of Toronto's UofTtix sales website yesterday when it received 23,000 hits in three minutes.

Thousands of would-be buyers were left empty-handed, including some who began lining up at the box office at 8:30 a.m. for a total of 900 tickets that were to go on sale at 11.

"We got inundated with calls and with people, and people trying to buy over the Web," box office attendant Kara Dymond said.

(snip)

"I think it's safe to say that Mr. Gore is quite possibly the hottest ticket in North America right now," said Ruta Pocius, spokesperson for the event and for a one-day symposium the same day.

6. I must be the most pathetic of optimists
Because I am dead certain that Al Gore will run for President in 2008, and that the moment he enters the race he will leave the others in the dust.

I see the year playing out like this:

The media gorges themselves on manufactured debate about Hillary and Obama, and the others until it plays out and they are all equally boring and no one really stands out. The middle of the road candidates will duke it out with the ones that are deemed "unelectable" but actually make sense, tell the truth and if we did what they said the country and the world would be better for it. But eventually this will get played out.

Meanwhile, Al wins the Oscar and his face, speech, everything is everywhere. Non-stop buzz for a nice ride of publicity. He will be coy. He will focus on the message of the film.

Obama had a new tie on today. Hillary has now decided to state the obvious forcefully after much consideration. Kucinich is great but no one cares.

Meanwhile Al wins the Nobel Prize. His face and speech are again everywhere. Again he is coy about his intention. Again he keeps focus on the message.

Time passes. Dodd drops out. PAC committes start to close.

Al Gore and Co. produce a global series of concerts for Global Warming relief and the Earth. He stands on stage before thousands of cheering people, mostly young people. He stands as an Oscar winner, Nobel Peace prize winner, and now here he is RockStar! He soaks it up and then gives inspiring hopeful speeches to indicate his intentions of further leadership, further unity for the common good.

And then people start to hope. And then people start to believe. And then people start to insist that he run. His moment has come it is clear. The time is now and he will decide he is ready for the fight.

Then he will declare and it will be all over.

At least that's what I think whenever I read anyone talking about candidates or see anything on TV about it. I smile at how silly it all is. These names won't matter. The race has not even begun. It's all just a TV show now.

At least this is my hunch. Worse things can happen. :patriot:

Who is this you are referring to? I think that's very rude to phrase it like you did.

16. Who else would it be referring to?
I think it's rude to have a war of choice based on cooked up evidence and send people to die- WHEN YOU NEVER would be a combat soldier yourself, is the height of rudeness. A coupla words on a message board? Hardly.

18. Welcome Ryan---
er.. a little advice. Read a sentence twice before you comment on it. If you had done that you might have figured out it was Bush---- unless of course you think it's rude to rip the idiot son...and if that's the case, good luck here at DU.

7. they should move his talk to the SkyDome!
Just like the Idaho event filled a sports stadium there. I bet Gore could pack the place, easily. Just between U of T, York, and Ryerson (not to mention the other universities within range, and the Toronto high schools) -- it would be jammed.

Edited on Sat Feb-10-07 08:54 AM by RestoreGore
And now I know why he keeps the political speculation going... because if he said unequivocably that he would never run for anything again, he might not sell out venues this way. And if true, that's actually a sad statement.
