Upcoming video game lets you kill brown-skinned folks at the border
Ever want to shoot those nasty illegals as they attempt to cross into the US? Well, you're going to get your chance soon! Oh, and this isn't some PC game developed by an obscure company targeted to white supremacist groups. This is coming to all major consoles, from one of the largest game developers in the world.

http://ghostrecon.us.ubi.com/newspost.php?news_id=4237

Here's a nut-shell summary: "In the year 2014, the rising conflict between Mexican loyalists and insurgent rebel forces has thrown Mexico into full-scale civil war. Under the command of Captain Scott Mitchell, the Ghosts are called upon to face an imminent threat to the United States. The fate of two countries now lies in the hands of the Ghosts as they fend off an attack on U.S. soil. Equipped with the most cutting-edge weaponry and technology, the Ghosts must battle on both sides of the border to neutralize the escalating rebel threat."

One of this game's selling points: "For the first time ever, the Ghosts will defend U.S. soil from a cross-border attack, taking the fight to all-new locations. The Ghosts will battle enemies in mountain terrains, barren deserts and even on their home turf in El Paso, Texas."

5. Yep, the irony of that is simply amazing
I suspect the Mexicans have a far stronger claim to El Paso than we do.

3. They're not talking about letting you kill UNARMED brown folks.
I'm no fan of Clancy these days but, I've heard the first Ghost Recon didn't have civilians. AT ALL. You didn't have situations of murdering unarmed people. AT ALL. Unless there's some change to that, your characterization's wildly off...

...even though this may indirectly be a sort of anti-Mexican fantasist thing. But as opposed to what, Japanese (Debt of Honor), Russians (most of Clancy's early work), Arabs (Sum of All Fears)? I don't think Mexicans should feel specially singled out here. The man's body of work covers lots of foreign nationals.

19. I play that one actually
its called Shattered Union. The opening intro is a little scary. Nuke attack on DC causes elections to be suspended. Territories start suceeding from the union civil war ensues. I constantly get my ass kicked as the Northern Alliance.

11. There's a video game involving almost anything.
Just like there's a book involving almost anything, a movie involving almost anything, etc.

13. Hmmm - I don't recall ever seeing a video game targeting Canada
If someone really wanted to be original and inventive, how about coming up with a scenario involving a rogue Canada? Hell, you could use all types of terrain for that - coastal, mountains, plains, badlands, etc!

Can't help but notice that the vast majority of these games target our "enemies" - Mexico, Venezuela, North Korea, etc.

15. Canada's not a credible menace.
The last conflict between Canada and the US involved about the same level of intelligence reliability about the Canadian threat as US intelligence about the Iraqi threat in 2003. Even Tom Clancy can't take it seriously.

16. And Mexico is?
Sorry, I just don't see Mexico as a credible menace. Neither do I see Venezuela as a menace, which is the subject of another popular military-action shooter.

20. The scenario spoken above speaks in context of a Mexican civil war.
Anarchy is a menace. Canada is unlikely to become anarchic. It's a very anarchy-averse country. Does the same go for Mexico? Not sure.

But even the scenario in the original post doesn't make it sound like an invasion by the government of Mexico for the purpose of seizing territory belonging to the United States of America.

The fact is, the question was about, why not Canada, and I answered...

12. Tom Clancy is a freaking fascist. What else is new?
He's been promoting the same line for ages: Americans against those brown people in rags. That is the source of his fiction, and his popularity among the stupid. There are lots of racist jerks writing "techno-thrillers," but Clancy is the king rat at this game.

14. Meh.
I've tried the Ghost games, and didn't really care for them too much as games. When I can make that complaint, the content of the game isn't particularly important. That said, Ghost Recon really is a good series of games. They've sold how many copies?

For being such a gamer geek, I don't have all that many military-style games or even shooters. Let's see:

Half-Life 2 (which really is a fun game)
Doom 3 (which was a disappointment to me, amazingly)
Far Cry (sleeper hit, get it get it get it! Absolutely gorgeous presentation for the time, and it looks even better with their AMD64 patch/graphics upgrade)
Quake 2 (old, dated, but still kind of fun and great practice with level design if you can find the BSP editor for it)
Quake 3 (a whole bunch of deathmatch, and that's IT)
Unreal Tournament 2004 (This one's very very cool, it's like getting seven games in one, with each of the modes equaling what another entire game would be! Definitely worth getting if you don't have it already)

Not too many. LOL I also have the 92kb shooter called .kkrieger (yes, there's a period in the title)

The only upcoming title I am salivating over right now is Spore. Spore could quite possibly be one of the best games ever made when it is released; they're putting some truly groundbreaking stuff into it, like procedurally generated animation and a ridiculously large space to play in. On that point, Will Wright has been quoted as saying there will be a galaxy environment holding millions of planets (!) for you to explore, terraform, and breed your creatures on.

Sorry. Get me talking about games and gaming and I can go on for an hour nonstop. :D

21. It doesn't take much of a crystal ball to see this one coming.
Here's my analysis from a month or so ago that points in exactly that direction:

Mexico's precarious future

Mexico is poised to go down the tubes. When they do, that northward flood of economic migrants are going to meet more than just Border Patrol officers. This is going to really suck, for everyone involved.

It's another fictional scenario that someone's written under Tom Clancy's name.
