Police probe alleged L.A. homeless dumping
I don't even know why a story like this would surprise me, and yet it does. An endless supply of money for killing, but this country refuses to take care of its least fortunate citizens. I don't get it. It breaks my heart.

Hospital van reportedly spotted dropping off paraplegic man on Skid Row

LOS ANGELES - A hospital van dropped off a paraplegic man on Skid Row, allegedly leaving him crawling in the street with nothing more than a soiled gown and a broken colostomy bag, police said.

Witnesses who said they saw the incident Thursday wrote down a phone number on the van and took down its license-plate number, which helped detectives connect the vehicle to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, the Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site.

Police said the incident was a case of “homeless dumping” and were questioning officials from the hospital.

“I can’t think of anything colder than that,” said Detective Russ Long. “There was no mission around, no services. It’s the worst area of Skid Row.”

Forget the old, poor, handicapped, homeless--it's the survival of the fittest that counts. Why isn't this a front page story instead of the death of Anna Nicole Smith?

5. "a soiled gown and a broken colostomy bag"
We could have had some sort of national heath care but Rush and his dittoheads took Congress. Remember? They all but made him an honorary memember. Remember Rush hating on the homeless?

Right wing haters will have a lot to pay for when the meet St. Peter.

Where are the organized efforts to get elected officials to take action?

The isolation of those of us faced with this horrific stuff is unimaginable to all muddle-class people!

10. The people in power don't care
how would a protest make a difference?

The problem is our economic system, which is intertwined with our government. An economic system based upon exploitation and deprivation is exactly what leads to this sort of thing happening. An economic system which neglects hospitals, schools and other necessities in favor of profits is what makes this happen.

We need to topple that economic system for anything to change.

11. The people who call themselves "progressives" don't care, either.
Imagine, if you will, what it would feel like to you to be in that situation, and read the snarky replies, rather than see demonstrations on your behalf.

12. The whole city government got the memo: disappear these people.
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 07:36 PM by sfexpat2000
The PD isn't a sovereign entity. They are dependent on City Hall for their pay checks and for everything else.

When I lived in L.A. County, the whole county was doing its best to disappear the homeless. Iirc, it had just become illegal to feed the hungry in the city of Santa Monica.

This is the state of this country, not only Los Angeles.

What are we willing to do about it? Because sure as I sit here, nothing will happen if it doesn't start with us. And the way Bushco is going, we could become "the hungry" if we aren't already, at any moment.

We can't wait for someone else to do this. We're up.

14. This is why we need to force Gov. Arnold more than ever
to unveto the health plan offered by Senator Kuehl in California. These people need to be in hospitals and taken care of. I can't even believe that any hospitals would even turn them out even if they don't have a health plan. Human decency demands it and our disastrous health care system seem to be more than lacking in it.

15. This is disgusting! Truly truly horrifying....
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 10:26 PM by nam78_two
I cannot believe that we have become a nation that values people to this extent by their posessions or lack thereof that something like this could occur.

More to the point, I don't understand why the jabbering dolts on the our news natworks dither on about this celebrity death, that love triangle, that celebrity nreak-up but cannot focus more on incidents like this that are truly outrageous...

I mean is tere a worse assault on human dignity than this?
Thisliving human being was tossed out on the street as though he were
yesterday's garbage..

Who is going to speak up for people like this? This will be another case that gets a certain amount of desultory attention and then eventually dies down....

This is terrible...K&R.... this should be on the greatest page.....
We ourselves to eake up to how truly horrifying the plight of the homeless is in this country....

21. "Who is going to speak up for people like this?"
I think it's... WE, THE PEOPLE!

I see you, over and over and over, kicking and recommending threads, and signing in to call over various poverty issues. :loveya:

But, most won't, as you've seen.

THAT is what's going to make the difference.

I would suggest calling and writing your news outlets, and get some LTTEs going. Ask your friends to do the same. THAT is what will get people to thinking.

I'd really like to see some full-page ads on this like this! Why can we do that for the war, but not for people like this???

Thank you so much for your faithfulness!! :pals:
