Yuk, yuk, yuk, very funny! :sarcasm: Fox News copy of Daily Show jokes about "killing Liberals"
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 12:33 PM by ck4829
Fox's new late night show Red Eye, a Fox spin on The Daily Show, hosted by Greg Gutfeld (former video blogger for Fox News and one of the few conservative contributors at "Huffington Post") has had a prolific start, joking about "killing liberals" on two separate shows this week.

(Rachel Marsden) RM: "What about the prisoners at Gitmo? How about if we just avoid the whole death penalty debate, whether or not we should try them, and just kill them in the field? Because as for the Peace of Westphalia, we can do that."

Comment: This was delivered so deadpan, it's almost impossible to tell if she was joking, but I pray - for a vast many reasons, that she was.

1. She's assuming everyone in Gitmo is guilty and deserves to be killed, even though the US government released almost 1/3 of the prisoners from there last year because "they pose no threat to the United States." But let's kill 'em all anyway! Check out Marsden's "Compassionate Conservatism!"

2. "The Peace of Westphalia?" She's quoting treaties from the 1600s that ended the Thirty Years' War and the Eighty Years' War? This Marsden is a real hoot!

And the jokes just kept coming!

(Bill Schulz) BS: "Rachel, should we just kill all liberals? We should just kill all liberals."

(On the show on Friday Morning)

(Greg Gutfield) GG: "Anna Nicole Smith is dead. She's dead. And you know who killed her? Rachel killed her."

RM: "Because she's a liberal? Is that why?"

but I just don't think that is remotely funny. And if you substitute "liberal" for "conservative" it's still not funny.

edited for lousy spelling

8. As another DUer so astutely pointed out recently:
Liberals protest people and things they disagree with.

Neocon Conservatives KILL (and advocate killing) people they disagree with.

2. A fake news show on a fake new network?
I don't recall the Daily Show ever talking about killing anyone. These comments from FAUX news are scary because the viewers are liable to take them seriously and go out and start killing anyone they perceive as less conservative than they are.

7. Now this really does have possibilities people.
They could dress up like fundy christians - you know that big ol fundy hair and the cheap suits and 1980's style dresses and they could end every single sentence with "death to liberals" - you know, the way the taliban ends every sentence with "death to america".

15. Au contraire!
The Washington Times has lost money for years, and Fox was paying affiliates to carry O'Reilly's idiotic radio show. The rightwing will lose money for years on this if they think it will advance their agenda. Look for every Fox program to flog "bits" from this dreadful show, and I'm sure interns at Fox are posting their crap on YouTube even as I write this.

10. These guys would be better advised doing a knockoff of "Hee Haw".
It's more their style and would have greater appeal among the knuckledraggers.

28. Even Hee Haw had its moments.
This show, OTOH, shows all the usual wit and charm of Mallard Fillmore. That is, none.

11. Why do they
hate America? :( Seriously, the liberals they're referring to are Americans too...so advocating the deaths of Americans is "funny" now? I really don't understand it. As much as I may disagree with, dislike, or even downright despise some conservatives, I don't want them dead, and I wouldn't even joke about murder. What is wrong with these people? :puke:

"I tell people don't kill all the liberals, leave enough around so we can have two on every campus; living fossils, so we will never forget what these people stood for."

13. This is an issue we can't laugh off. And just to drive this point home,
how many people think the JFK, MLK, Bobby Kennedy and so many other people of that era, (not to mention doctors who perform abortions), were killed by liberals?

If there's virtually one thing we can be certain of, it's that liberals don't believe or engage in the practice of killing political opponents.

Can the same be said of conservatives? I'll just leave that question hang there and let you draw your own conclusions.

14. To repeat: Humor does not work from the Conservative angle
Its a basic premise of comedy. It is supposed to come from the underdog speaking to power. It is the upstart. The rebel. It pokes at those in charge.

Conservatism by definition defends the old guard. It is the defender of power. It seeks to embrace the rich. Humor cannot come from this position. Any attempt to do so will be seen as condescending and insulting to the public. It will come off as cruel and inhumane.

Its not that Conservatives don't have a sense of humor. Its just that jokes don't work from the Conservative angle. Haha... look at him.... he can't support himself due to circumstances beyond his control. See not funny.

16. This is the Fox News audience, though
Rush Limbaugh has survived for years mocking "Feminazis" and "Tree-huggers" and "political correctness."

For a lot of them, they might laugh at the plight of the little guy being so helpless.

They often accuse us of having no sense of humor because we're too politically correct and too afraid to say anything controversial.

18. Awareness
That seems to be the key. The more aware you are of issues the more repellent such attempts at humor will appear. So there will always be an audience for hate filled humor. But as society advances such things are eschewed over time. This is exactly what the reaction to PC is. It is those who have not moved forward reacting to the anger to their attempts at humor. To be fair there can be true humor found within nonPC jokes. But more often than not individuals who turn to such things lack the sensitivity or artistry to carry it off and they come off sounding like jerks.

21. You nailed the difference with your word "mocking"
Satire holds up objects and situations to scrutiny by exposing their falseness; mockery simply belittles by slurs and name-calling.

I think the writers of the new Fox News show are missing the difference. They believe they're holding up liberalism to scrutiny, but instead of exposing its contradictions and falseness, which they probably think they're doing, they're actually exaggerating their own tendencies to try to belittle it. It's a weird sort of self-imposed Colbertism.

In my opinion, the only time satire really works is when logical attempts to understand a situation run aground. In the cases cited in the OP, the writers have to ignore the logical arguments that address their issues, and it renders satire impossible. Mockery is all they have left.

22. My high school English teacher gave me a great definition of satire
I still remember it this to this day, word for word... and I graduated high school in 1985.

Wit & humor used to ridicule individuals or institutions of man's devisings. The true satirist attempts not to tear down, but to evoke change.

I think the RW "humorists" are just trying to tear down.

Perfect way to think of humor -- what does the humorist intend? Change or destruction.

Rightwingers think its funny to go on television and suggest killing political opponents. The culture of life in action. Dumbasses.
