2. Wow. Nice song. Thanks for posting.
Anybody know to whom he's referring in the opening verse--"chained her to a heavy thing and threw her in the water"?

4. Lacey Peterson - remember her?
Around here we're all getting fuckin sick and tired of that case. But the song is terrific.

9. Kris uses it for a reason
Maybe not a direct metaphor, symbolic nonetheless, of a "patriarch" throwing the future away through deadly reckless acts upon those beloved and helpless. Sound like somebody we all know.

5. Kris, thanks
A straight foreword sad song about war, melancholy yet ripe with metaphors.

Thanks frogmarch, too.

11. Most powerful protest song of this era.
The video pounds it home.

Thanks for sharing.

13. Fabulous. IMO Kristofferson is absolutely brilliant
Well, he actually was a Rhodes scholar. This isn't the best example, but his lyrics are pure, pure poetry. I've got is "Kristofferson Sings Kristofferson" and every song on there is simply brilliant.

I've also got a CD called "Third World War" and it's pretty amazing as well.

God, I love protest songs and protest songwriters. And Kris Kristofferson.

14. "Brats", another Kristoferson film you all should see...
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 03:16 PM by calipendence
First, thanks for the link. It confirms my feelings about the man!

The man is a true American hero, kind of like he was depicted in that TV series "Amerika" many years ago that eerily describes America under Soviet rule which is almost like what it's becoming now.

He's a vet and a military brat from his earlier years himself, so if anyone you talk to about him wants to shove him aside as some "Anti-American" anti-war nut, show them this film...

Kris Kristoferson when he was an Army helicopter pilot

Especially if they are vets. I know the filmmakers of this, and saw early versions of it at a brats reunion I was in a year and a half ago. It's one of the few films to give an honest assessment of what it's like to be a "brat" (family member of those military folk stationed overseas, etc.). The filmmaker, though doing it as a non-profit effort and trying to make it non-partisan (it was shown at West Point) are definitely Democrats and I think their sensibility shows through.

They make points through the movie that the military is one of the first forms of socialism that our society has had, with military bases where much of what those in the military have is paid for or subsidized (free housing, PX privileges, etc.) and one of the first places before the civil rights movement where true racial and religious integration happened where minorities lived alongside more equally others then.

I really think it can be used to persuade those vets and their families who might be going through a time of questioning their own identities and values that there are those like us who feel the same way about the world and who understand them better than these chickenhawk neocons that are just trying to use them up and spit them out!

I was told that Kris Kristoferson did this as close to pro bono (both his acting/narration and his song writing) as the acting unions would allow, so that shows where his heart is!
