Y'know what would be an AWESOME feature for DU ?
The ability to 'hide' threads with a 'free form' entry similar to our current search function.

IE - a screen that allows you to type in (example) BEER and will query out (hide) all threads relating to beer.

:dilemma: Hmmmm. Not really beer, though.

1. Hell, I've been wishing for "Hide Threads By Keyword" ever since the Gannon Wrinkles threads.

17. How about "REPLY WITHOUT KICK"
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 08:57 PM by JackRiddler
Like, I almost just replied to "ANNA CHOKED TO DEATH ON HER OWN VOMIT" to say that this is really crosses the line of utter triviality and STFU already --

(btw if anyone wants to read a brilliant "Anna" thread about class, sexism, money and the legal system, see HamdenRice's article, here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x160878 )

-- and then I didn't, since that would kick.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could state your view without boosting something that annoys you?

And how about: REPLIES IN NUMERICAL ORDER... i.e., you could choose to have all postings in a thread display in the order they were posted, so that on returning to a thread you just continue reading from where you stopped previously.

This would take some getting used to but generally it's obvious who's responding to whom. It would help avert that tipping point in the life of long threads, when enough side comments and no/yes/no/yes/no exchanges accumulate that the thread loses any coherence to the newcomer.

Also, it might discourage latecomers from hijacking the top sub-thread (i.e., like what I'm doing right here so that you read my shit first).

It seems, given the data structure already in place, it would be simple to offer this as a display option on a thread-by-thread basis.

18. You're not hijacking, you're replying.
And I agree completely, HamdenRice's OP was fucking awesome.

2. I'm sure DU administration will hop right on that in wake of
the recently successful nuclear ignore feature.

4. Yes well the block misfeature
directly affected other posters. What you choose to ignore only affects you. The suggestion would simply automate what many of us do tediously.

7. I understand. I'm just saying that if you give someone an
impromptu gift, and they tell you they hate it -- you're probably not going to be in a huge hurry to give them another gift so quickly.

(My analogy for the failed nuclear ignore feature.)

Besides, while I agree it would be a nice feature, it doesn't sound exactly simple to configure and implement.

3. I'd love the ability to hide subthreads
Often the biggest subthread on a post is a worthless pissing match. It would be great to be able to collapse those, especially in the cases where I haven't started the worthless pissing match.

19. I'd hate that!
Now you have to smack me back, and so forth.

Every longer thread seems to develop at least one of these cancerous subthreads. A leading cause of thread death.

5. I suggested that some time ago but with the addition of a time period
that would cancel the hiding. IE I do not want to see any Beer threads for two weeks. :)

21. If you had Bill Gates's brain
You'd be just smart enough to buy an OS from real programmers and sell IBM on the idiot plan of giving you a monopoly on it for PCs.
