Poll question: So , what are your plans when the genital herpes vaccine comes out?
Edited on Fri Feb-09-07 05:50 PM by hedgehog
I figure it's in the works since there are vacines now for chicken pox and shingles which are tied to a related virus.

1. What's the incentive for a herpes vaccine?
Right now Big Pharm is making huge money on both the name brand and generics of the anti-virals marketed to treat herpes symptoms.

I don't anticipate a vaccine any day soon.

45. I don't think so. The longterm payoff with herpes simplex ii is symptom management.
Think about it this way.

With a vaccine, the projected/anticipated outcome is the eradication of a disease. Herpes simplex ii is not lethal, its symptoms are not incapacitating, it is present in 20% of the U.S. population, and it's pretty dang contagious. That's a guaranteed present & future market for pharmco.

We could compare it to the common cold: Why would they want to find a cure for that when they make so much money off of theraflu, cough syrups, decongestants, etc?

Just my opinion.

52. Well if it were mandated, they'd get 80% - 90% of the public to buy in.
Then, of course they'd determine the need for ..... "boosters." ;)

I believe that this vaccine should be made available, but we should not be forced to take it.

"Wait 42 years". That seems to be a hit at those who would be cautious about this vaccine.

6. This vaccine only protects against 4 HPV strains!
There are over ONE HUNDRED documented strains and they are finding more all the time. This shot is an expensive crock of shit and they are trying to make billions of dollars off of it. They are lobbying all of the states to try to force us to give it to all sixth grade girls in the nation. How much money do you think that is going to make the pharmaceutical company?? It has not been out long enough to rule out serious side effects for our children. If your child gets the shot and one of the side effects is birth defects in any children she may have, what then??? They will cover it up as long as they can. But it will be too late for us. This has happened before with several drugs....severe side effects.....cover up, etc.....

13. Umm, the poll is about a hypothetical herpes vaccine, not HPV.
Since herpes is more of an equal opportunity virus and since some peopl ehere may not have it yet but may engage in behaviors that could expose them to it, I thought I'd give us something new to argue about.

Trust what I'm told by drug profiteers without question, and vaccinate my two year old on the double! Then, I will proceed to chasten those who examine the data and/or give the vaccine time to demonstrate it's both safe and effective.

And a vaccine for more of the HPV strains are in the works and may be released this year. These are quite similar to the various hepatitis vaccines as well.

Yes, even though men don't get pregnant, they can use birth control also. I hadn't thought about getting this for my son. Shit, you caught me not thinking. Odd, that, as usually I catch myself sooner. Thank you, truly, for catching me. Are they recommending this for males?

25. I am unaware of the details of any genital herpes vaccine
I figured this was just a hypothetical poll question. But I do have to say, the only person I've known who had genital herpes and openly talked to me about it was a man, in his mid 30's, who had contracted it in college and was obviously a carrier. He used precautions, but the risk is always there. As far as the HPV vaccine goes, they apparently ARE testing it on boys, so we will see. I would get it for my kid. I know a woman who married a widower. Both were in their 30s. Unbeknownst to her, he was a carrier of HPV. She contracted it from him, got cervical cancer and went through years of painful operations and treatments. So that sortof throws out the whole "promiscuous sex" argument of the fundies. Married people can have/get it too. Scary world we live in!

Hope your little one stays safe and healthy!

17. It Depends
Who Pays for my getting the vaccine?

How many shots do I need to get or how many pills do I have to take?

Is the vaccine 100% effective?

What are the possible side effects?

Is the price I pay reasonable -- or am I simply putting money into the pockets of the fat cats who own Big Pharma?

Is the vaccine made using mercury?

Was the vaccine developed without harming animals?

Will the vaccine be avaiable free of charge to poor people?

On the other hand, if we give it for free to poor people, we can let them be the guinea pigs and wait a few years to see if they all turn purple and die! There's the ticket!

Aren't you interested in knowing how I catch gential herpes from an elevator button?

And if antibiotic gel doesn't work, I can always carry my can of Lysol spray -- kills 98% of germs AND viruses on surfaces (or so the manufacturer tells me).

35. Got Any Kleenex Boxes?
I am always on the look out for empty Kleenex boxes. They make such wonderful slippers.

Puffs boxes would also work, but sometimes they have a weird smell in them. Probably because of the perfume in Puffs.

I prefer Kleenex boxes because they go better with my decor.

Of course I do not spray Lysol directly on my genitals.

First, I spray Lysol onto some Kleenex.

Then I wipe the Kleenex on my genitals (and the surrounding areas).

That way, I empty the Kleenex boxes quicker.

A steady supply of slippers AND a way to prevent genital herpes!

46. It's definitely being worked on - Clinical trials at LSU
Hi-

I can definitely say that trials are being done. Recently, women from 18-30 at LSU and the Baton Rouge area were able to enroll in a vaccine trial. Unfortunately, at 34, I am too old to participate, otherwise I would have.

According to the study's website, the vaccine is being tested at more than 40 sites, 7,550 women will be in the trial and followed for 20 months. This vaccine could be promising, Phase III trials with over 7,400 women were reported to have tolerated the vaccine well.
