I recall individual's families being billed for the recovery of their lost loved ones, on occasion. The search for this guy is costing some big bucks.. and in some of the pictuures, I have noticed a military involvement too..

Fossett survival skills prompt hope as hunt enters fifth day

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Rescuers hoped Friday that Steve Fossett's legendary survival skills would enable the aviator to hold out until he is found as the search for the missing adventurer entered its fifth day.

The 63-year-old veteran of several world record-breaking solo plane and balloon flights has not been heard from since taking off from a private airstrip 80 miles (130 km) southeast of Reno, Nevada, early Monday.

On Thursday officials expanded the area of remote, mountain terrain being searched to 10,000 square miles (25,900 square kilometers) -- an area nearly the size of the state of Massachusetts -- and have said the search for the airman is like "looking for a needle in a haystack."

A total of 26 aircraft, including light planes, helicopters and a C-130 military-equipped plane, were airborne on Friday as the search for Fossett intensified, officials said.

3. No. It's a good drill for searchers. Reservists need flight time. It might as well be...
meaningful.

Policies requiring people to pay for rescues have been scaled back.

He did cost us taxpayers alot of money already. BUT, now I'm worried about him and I hope he's still alive. (I'm such a wimp).

6. I'm not sure how it's determined when to demand reimbursement and when not to.
Two of my DIL's nephews took a walk in the north Ga. woods a few weeks ago and got lost. They had a cell with them and called their father who then called the police. It was a very mountainous area and the GPS locator in the cell didn't work, so they had helicopters, and hundreds of police and civilians hunt for the two kids (ages 11 & 15). They ended up having to spend the night in the woods, but were finally found the next afternoon and were fine. I know THEY were never asked for reimbursement.

Now that you ask, I wonder what IS the factor used to decide when to ask for reimbursement?

I know in TX, if someone drives around a barricade and gets stuck in the raging flood waters, they are fined, because it was their own fault!

7. A few years back, a couple of teens got lost in the forest, and the parents
were charged $8k..but then that's a small price to pay to get your kid back alive :)
