http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=engAs the annual four-month long storm season approaches, the country’s southern provinces have been asked to make preparations in a bid to lessen the impacts of the natural disasters. The request was made at a regional conference jointly organised by the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and the National Rescue Committee in Ho Chi Minh City on September 6. The Steering Committee urged all provinces and cities in the region strengthen river and sea dykes, construct storm shelters and protect riverhead and coastal forests. Localities were also asked to step up public awareness campaigns and to improve upon local disaster forecasting and rescue efforts. Vietnam’s southern region has so far been buffeted by 100 whirlwinds, which claimed 20 lives and left 45 others injured. More than 400 homes were destroyed and another 2,800 had their roves blown off. Land slides near river and sea banks as a result of flooding also killed four people, brought down 40 houses and left thousands of ha in ruin. Whirlwinds at sea left nine people dead and missing and sank some 60 ships and boats. Total losses caused by natural disasters in the region this year was estimated at close to 83 billion VND (5.19 million USD).
