extreme weather has Vietnam govt. working quickly to protect people

As the annual four-month long storm season approaches, the country’s southern provinces have been asked to make preparations in a bid to lessen the impacts of the natural disasters. The request was made at a regional conference jointly organised by the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and the National Rescue Committee in Ho Chi Minh City on September 6. The Steering Committee urged all provinces and cities in the region strengthen river and sea dykes, construct storm shelters and protect riverhead and coastal forests. Localities were also asked to step up public awareness campaigns and to improve upon local disaster forecasting and rescue efforts. Vietnam’s southern region has so far been buffeted by 100 whirlwinds, which claimed 20 lives and left 45 others injured. More than 400 homes were destroyed and another 2,800 had their roves blown off. Land slides near river and sea banks as a result of flooding also killed four people, brought down 40 houses and left thousands of ha in ruin. Whirlwinds at sea left nine people dead and missing and sank some 60 ships and boats. Total losses caused by natural disasters in the region this year was estimated at close to 83 billion VND (5.19 million USD).

Damage level: Heavy

1. The time is fast approaching
Governments may just end up declaring thet coastal areas are off limits for housing. A 5 mile buffer would eliminate a lot of deaths and property damage.

Coastal areas that are communal usage areas, and which have little commercial (except for the obvious harbor activities) may be the the future..

Imagine the difference if there were parks, marshes and recreation areas instead of tightly packed, poorly designed structures on coastlines.

if the seas rise significantly, the beaches will mostly disappear anyway, so there goes tourism..
