Lincoln, Reagan, George Bush, and Giuliani
Edited on Sun Feb-11-07 08:05 AM by bigtree

Giuliani praises Bush's Iraq policy, foresight

He disparages a Senate nonbinding rebuke on a visit to California to build a GOP campaign base for the presidency.

By Michael Finnegan
February 11, 2007

SACRAMENTO — Republican presidential hopeful Rudolph W. Giuliani praised President Bush's war leadership on Saturday and mocked supporters of a nonbinding congressional resolution condemning the U.S. troop buildup in Iraq.

The former New York City mayor came to Bush's defense as he promoted his White House candidacy at a California Republican convention. Drawing parallels between Iraq and America's Civil War, Giuliani compared Bush's political troubles to Abraham Lincoln's. When the Civil War was unpopular, Giuliani said, Lincoln "kept his eye ahead."

"He was able to say, 'I know my people are frustrated, and I know my people are angry at me.' " But after weighing public opinion, Lincoln had "that ability that a leader has — a leader like George Bush, a leader like Ronald Reagan — to look into the future," Giuliani said.

Giuliani's defense of the currently unpopular president comes as he is portraying himself as a decisive leader unafraid to buck public opinion . . .

2. Oh, keep it up, Rudy.
Keep talking like that and if you get the GOP nom, we'll be able to kick your ass come Nov '08.

Right now, a majority of the Am people see Bush, not a "looking toward the future" but as a miserable failure. 21 months from now, anybody wanta bet that percent will not be higher?

So go ahead and praise him to the hilt and tie yourself to his coattails, give your future opponent's ad makers plenty for footage and sound. The voters will "thank you" for it at the polls.

Go for it!

3. I'm not so sure about that.
I know Democrats who LOVE Guiliani and would vote for him over Hillary or Edwards.

Yes, I happen to live in a purple state, but the people I'm talking about COME from blue states (namely Pennsylvania).

These aren't folks who keep up with politics 24/7 like we do. They think Rudy IS a real hero.

We must ALWAYS consider the news media when rooting for or against candidates. ALWAYS.

7. Ah, but wait.
Wait until all the dirt comes out.

Wait until the info on his "business dealings" since 9-11 come out.

Never mind the stuff about his "love life", that can be the purview of the tabloids, the stuff he's pulled since than will be more than enough to turn a large number of folks off.

Heroes can be brought down awful fast by "dirty little secrets."

10. Yeah - my friends couldn't care about his love life.
As I said, they're Democrats, for the most part: loved Bill Clinton, but hate Hillary (they think she's cold and calculating, etc.). But, they think Guiliani is cool: 9/11 and his more moderate/liberal stances on social issues.

I think it's the news media perception of both Hillary and Rudy. And they think Edwards is a fake. They like Obama, etc. It's the news media driving their perceptions. Honestly.

11. You're right to an extent, but...
nobody outside of NYC knows about Prince Rudy's mean streak. All they know about is his playing hero of 9/11.

He was a mediocre US Attorney, always getting into trouble over leaks from his office, and his record was not nearly as good as he likes to tell. As Mayor, he ruled as a petty tyrant and the city was in danger of going broke from the lawsuits piling up-- even the City Council had to sue him to see the budget.

Didn't agree with him? He would destroy you over the smallest things.

His star was fading in the city before 9/11 because he kept on pissing off more and more groups with silly fights over silly things. I'll never forget the Great Ferret War, but that was only one small incident. The entire Black community in NYC hated him with a passion-- he would never talk to any of them but belittled their concerns in public.

The NYPD actually hated the Great Crimefighter for a lot of reasons, not the least of which purged the leadership of some good guys who wouldn't play along and put in a bunch of yes men and asskissers. A story going around the PD one year was that around Christmas he had tried to get the hospital emergency rooms to put seriously injured crime victims on life support so they wouldn't die until after Jan 1-- the idea was to make the year's murder rate a little lower so he could get bragging rights.

Giuliani has Shrub's worst traits of obstinance, arrogance and secrecy, but is a lot meaner and more driven than Shrub-- a scary thought.

Nope-- Rudy's true personality will come out some time during the campaigns, and I doubt too many in the country will like him once they see what he really is.

And, never underestimate a certain amount of bigotry in the Heartland-- an Eye-talian from Brooklyn is a suspicious character to begin with in many quarters.

Part of me hopes he is their candidate so he can be destroyed for good.
