My son just took off for Iraq again.
This is his 3rd (and last) deployment there. As soon as he is done in Sept. he is able to leave the military. I don't have a good feeling about this one. Things are going to shit so much over there, I can barely type thru the tears right now. I am literally sick to my stomach. He is Security Forces in the Air Force so at least he isn't kicking down doors in the red zone.

You're both in my thoughts and I really really really hope that he stays safe. I can't imagine the pain - I think of how I would feel if my husband was going and I just cry.

I'd give you a real hug if I could, but virtual ones will have to do.

I know there is nothing anyone can say that will make this any easier for you -- my husband spent 6 months in Fallujah last year and every waking moment was scary as hell.

Best wishes to your family.

24. I have a helmet liner I set aside that I can finish and send to him.
It'll keep him warm during night duty at least. I wish I could do more.

I started the liner for a soldier who's home now (I feel so guilty that it's not done), so it's got to be good luck--she came home in one piece, safe and sound. I don't have much left on it, so I could have it done in a week or so and send a care package along with it.

Let me know if you think he'd like one. They're basically balaclavas that cover his head and neck.

64. focus on him coming through the door in September, safe and sound
Whenever you find yourself lying awake staring at the ceiling, thinking of him... keep your thoughts on his safe return. It's natural to worry, but to get off that treadmill when you just can't keep your mind off him, focus on having him back with you.

A few weeks ago somebody here (I'm so sorry I can't remember who) mentioned thinking of a soldier coming back home and doing his laundry.... Find an image that feels good to you, something that means that he came home safely like a first trip back to McDonald's or borrowing the car again, whatever, and stick to it like glue.
