Dems: Propose creation of new Cabinet post: "Global Warming Prevention
Edited on Sun Feb-11-07 11:43 AM by npincus
Initiatives" or some-such title. That person would be responsible for the new "Department of Global Warming Prevention"- not a huge new bureaucracy, but rather a qualified group of non-partisan scientific experts working to design policy and coordinate and expedite implementation of these policies, with the goal to stop (or slow down) global warming. Another, larger part of this Department would work on worst case scenario projections of rising sea levels, and climactic effects on our food and water supply, dislocated populations: so-called disaster planning.

I would love to see Al Gore appointed, if he doesn't run himself (I don't think he is).

This issue rises to the level of a Cabinet Post, and I think Dem "front-runners" ought to put this in their platform. Unless it's already there.

3. I'd be happy with just a Bush defeat in the war on science.
I think an effective EPA is an appropriate place for US policy making on global warming. And so does Bush. That's probably why his has been destroying their library and archives systems.

6. I saw "An Inconvenient Truth" last night
it scared the shit out of us (hubby and I). It doesn't look like we have any time to waste. I don't see global warming being put on a menu of environmetnal issues to address- It is literally a matter of planetary survival. The bit about Greenland and the apparant rapid melting at the surface, these areas of melted water tunnel down into ice and eventually will collapse and cause breakup.... the movie didn't just offer scarey rhetoric, the photographs told the story.

The film imparted the sense of urgency that has driven Gore since this crisis came to his attention in the 70's.

4. Does every damned problem require yet more bureaucracy?
How about just dealing with the problem with the current structure?

Oh, that's right: We'll have to have a hearing on that before we can consider it.

Having FEMA sure as hell didn't help the victims of Katrina; what the hell good is yet another cabinet position for global warming?
