Flood - Australia

More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from a shopping centre in Campbelltown in Sydney's south-west after serious flooding caused a ceiling to collapse. The local fire brigade says six fire tankers, as well as police and the ambulance service, are on stand-by at the Campbelltown Mall while council engineers are due to inspect the damage. The State Emergency Service has also been called in to sandbag the area. There have been no reports of injuries.

Emergency services have received 110 calls for assistance in southwest Sydney following torrential downpours earlier today. State Emergency Service (SES) spokesman Phil Campbell said thunderstorm activity was continuing over Campbelltown and Camden and keeping SES volunteers busy. "There's been flash flooding and overflowing of gutters and down pipes in Campbelltown and Camden," Mr Campbell said. "We are looking at further heavy rain and expecting a busy night." Cambridge Avenue in Campbelltown has been closed in both directions due to flooding. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for Sydney, the Central Tablelands, the Hunter, Illawarra, Southern Tablelands and South Coast, with heavy rain and flash flooding forecast for later today. Almost 30mm of rain has fallen over Warragamba dam.

heavy rain and thunderstorms with severe lightning, high winds, much hail are doing a lot of destruction.
