Tonight! Dixie Chicks predicted to bring politics to Grammys
They're up for 5 Grammys tonight...and they're not ready to make nice.

Dixie Chicks could bring political edge to Grammys

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Grammys could take a rare step into the political arena on Sunday if the Dixie Chicks win the coveted album-of-the-year award, as observers of the music industry's biggest honors are predicting.

The Texas country trio is reveling in its new outsider status after picking a fight with President George W. Bush in 2003, and watching its popularity plummet as the Republican-leaning country music establishment snubbed the chart-topping group.

The Chicks' first album since the brouhaha, "Taking the Long Way," yielded five Grammy nominations, including three for the wry single "Not Ready to Make Nice."

GUTSY CHICKS
Criticizing the U.S. war in Iraq and the president got the Dixie Chicks in trouble with their core audience, but it opened up a whole new fan base.

And we'll be there to encourage them!

Please check in here if you spot the Peace Plane - either in person or on the red carpet pre-Grammy shows.

We'll be flying all this afternoon.

3. I love them too, and I will be surprised if they don't have...
something to say about politics. Only problem might be is the reception that they get from the rest of the crowd... Not sure how many Democrats vs Republicans there are in that crowd...

4. Joan Baez won a lifetime achievement award last night:
<snip>

The bittersweet night wrapped up on a high note with Joan Baez, a singing and guitar-playing icon of the anti-war movement of the 1960s, who said she has been enjoying a resurgence due to President Bush.

"President Bush is the best publicity agent I've ever had," Baez said.

"People always ask me to compare then versus now," she said. "It's very much like a re-run but there is much different ... The point is if artists are figuring out how to deal, I think they are rising to the occasion."

5. Allot of the 60's and 70's protesters are just now showing up...
Damn, sure wish they had made out sooner, but better late than never I guess.... Hope Jane Fonda doesn't just make it a one time thing, but gets out to all of these protests... She's getting up there in age, but it would seem to me that she would want to protect her grand kids rights and future as well.

21. And a lot of them have been there before nearly anyone else
And who're you talking about -- singers and artists, or everyday folks? Doesn't matter, my assertion applies either way.

News Release

February 8, 2007

A small group of members from Democracy for America Miami and Miami Veterans for Peace have come up with a novel approach to broadcasting a message to end the occupation of Iraq: an aerial banner that reads, "Bring Our Troops Home Now". These two groups decided to first try their idea at this year's Super Bowl in Miami, but bad weather prevented the plane from taking off. Now the organizers have turned their attention to this Sunday's Grammy Awards, which will be in Los Angeles. A plane has been leased to fly the same message over the Staples Center where the Grammys are taking place.

"Though Iraq is the number one issue in America, and though the vast majority of Americans want our troops home as expeditiously as possible, the Senate has decided not to even debate the occupation of Iraq," said Sam Feldman of Miami Veterans for Peace. "Therefore, we must broadcast the message over the rooftops of America until our elected officials show the same courage that our young men and women who are fighting in Iraq show every day."

Grammys embrace voices of protest

Protest music has moved from the American counterculture during the Vietnam era to high-profile recognition at tonight's annual Grammy Awards.

Political songs by such masters as Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young all got short shrift from music-industry professionals who voted on the Grammys in the '60s and '70s. But a larger, more sophisticated membership this year has nominated 12 acts for work commenting on the Iraq war, President Bush's policies, Hurricane Katrina and terrorism's global shadow.

Two of those acts, the Dixie Chicks and John Mayer, will perform during the three-hour show on CBS.

Presenters include '60s folk singer-activist Joan Baez, Bush-bashing comic Lewis Black and hip-hop's Black Eyed Peas, whose upcoming CD is said to tackle social issues. And nominees include politically outspoken musicians Neil Young, the Flaming Lips and Dylan, who with a win would have golden opportunities to share their views at the podium.

18. Their concert last summer was amazing.
We saw them in NYC and the audience couldn't get enough of them.

And when they first took the stage, they entered to "Hail to the Chief". Hilarious.

25. Bought the tixs as a bday present for my hubby.
I had kind of been a sort of fan before the whole Shrub incident. He was always a fan. Now, I love them to death. Great show! And tons of gay fans were there. Go figure. We know what it's like to be vilified on such a massive scale.
