The following redefines American civility - be warned:
A bumper sticker.

"My son is in Iraq.
Enjoy your freedom."

I can think of two possibilities... what's your take?

For now though he is fucked.
I am doing all I can to free your son by opposing Bush's illegal and insane war--YOU'RE WELCOME!

3. I hope someday he gets free too.
First impression is my cynical mind saying quit shoving your pseudo-patriotism down my throat, followed by pity and the above.

9. The other possibility I thought of,
is that the bumper sticker is meant to be sarcasm...

But then I saw all the other 'support the troops' jingoism.

It doesn't make much sense to piss on everybody else because of your own personal loss.

"My son went to war, so piss on you!"

Well, I could have kept my car right behind hers, using my freedom to prevent her from leaving. And I could have said to her "My politician sent your son to Iraq for my freedom so I'm going to enjoy it." Obviously not, and I'm saying that in cynical hindsight - but it's fluff like hers that's only going to descend the people of America further down the cesspool of indecency.

6. I would genuinely like to ask the person displaying that sticker...
...what their son's being in Iraq has to do with any American's freedom.

7. Just another misguided parent. The Iraqis would like a little
freedom. Hopefully it will come when their son returns.

8. During our local peace rally, a driver yelled out a remark similar to that one.
Our peace banner read: "Bring Home The Troops." The driver yelled out, "It's because of those troops that you have the right to stand there."

Sometimes, my head seems to be on the verge of exploding as I try to formulate a response to the right-wingers' inscrutable logic concerning the Iraq war.

11. My son is in Iraq - enjoy your freedom
I read this as 'dammnit, my son is in Iraq - enjoy your freedom - why aren't you over there?'

I have a 23 y.o. daughter who is thankfully in college pursuing a bachelors & masters.

My 18 y.o. daughter is deaf, so she never need worry about having to 'serve' in the military.

I was in college ROTC for 3 months - just to help the ROTC program survive at that school.

I live in a military community - they're going over to Iraq, but they are NOT happy about it. Most of them think GW is a nitwit (the nicest way I can put it).

I thought we put a stop to this last November - I guess we'll have to deluge our represetatives and senators with paper mail to get the message through. They apparently do not pay attention to email or faxes. I feel like sending them rocks - like 'Get us OUT of Irock'.

I'm really frustrated at this point and don't know what to do....

15. A simple, appropriate response would be a simple....

"BULLSHIT!"

...as loud as you can manage.

Some people are so unbelieveably fuckwitted.

10. That can be read two ways.
The big premise of the right though is war defends freedom and therefore defines it. The truth is, rights enumerated by law determines freedom or the absence of it. Both tyrants and democrats go to war.

13. Dude's son posed huge risk to America and had to leave?
I thought that security threats were usually sent to the Guantanamo Bay Concentration Camp, so now I'm a little confused.

14. And there's no obvious security threats to offshoring...
But I wouldn't use a Lenovo... Last time I looked at the task list on a newly unpackaged computer, I found a running app that's known to be spyware (or it's one hell of a coincidence that this "help" file has the identical name to that of a key logger...)

It was probably just a coincidence; why would anyone care about consumers anyway? Going after big corporations and governments is where it's really at.

16. Without a doubt I read it as....
"He's there for you, you'd better appreciate it." Definitely that every single military assignment is somehow directly related to our freedom in America. If I were serving, I'd certainly have to convince myself of such a thing in order to keep going, day in and day out. I'm not being a smart-ass, I'm serious; in such difficult, life-threatening situations that people volunteered for, they MUST find some reason within themselves to justify all the pain and grief.

Reminded me of an encounter with a fairly new neighbor last summer. I had gotten my lawnmower stuck in a ditch (:eyes: ), and a guy running came by and very kindly helped me out.

He introduced himself as being a new neighbor, and that he is home on a short leave from Iraq, heading back for his third tour (and he was at least mid-40s). I thanked him for his kindness and wished he and family well. He said, "I'm over there for you and your freedom," as he ran off.
