I just stumbled half-way into CSPAN2's broadcast of a book talk by Barry Lando, Web of Deceit. It covers the history of Iraq from Winston Churchill to Bush II. He spoke about the Shia uprising at the end of the first Gulf War, how Bush I abandoned the rebels, leaving Saddam to butcher at least 100,000. Saddam was a brutal monster. But the meddling by the US and Great Britain throughout the history of that country sounds absolutely sickening. This book, I think, is a valuable resource for understanding the history of that region.
