If Mexico had a leader similar to Hugo Chavez, would Mexicans still flee
for the U.S.? Would life for Mexicans improve? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

1. The US would be invading Mexico
If the numerous coup attempts failed.

2. If there was more money to be made in the US...
Then yes they would keep coming to the United States. I doubt Chavez would have a major impact on the value of the peso one way or the other.

3. In answer to your question .... Absolutely not.......
I have a world of time for Hugo Chavez... and I believe that he is all about his people and not just Hugo Chavez.... JMHO of course.

4. Eventually yes. Most of Mexico's problems stem from the fact that it
is something like an oligarchical kleptocracy. Five (IIRC it is five) families own and run nearly everything, and they do not share, nor play well with others.

5. not a bad question, really
You could also ask it another way:

If Venezuela were geographically where Mexico is, Chavez, oil and all, would Venezuelans flee to the US?

8. If Venezuela were geographically where Mexico was an intelligent US President...
Would be kissing Chavez's ass in order to get their oil instead of kissing the Saudi Royal Family's asses. Maybe if we weren't so hostile to Chavez he wouldn't be so friendly with Ahmadinejad.

10. Right and here's the deal
We get a shitload of oil from Mexico right now. OK, the Canterel Oilfield is showing past peak but the extraction wealth of Mexico has done squat for the common people while billions have been pumped out.

J. Paul Getty once quipped: "Pemex is the only oil company in the world that has never shown a profit".

6. I'm not a huge fan of Chavez, but in the long term I'd have to say yes
Mexico is desperately in need of a more educated workforce if it is to improve its economy and its standard of living. Chavez is at least more interested in educating his people than the right wing governments of Mexico.

IMO, Chavez has done some good things whereas the current government of Mexico almost nothing good.

7. some would flee, no doubt about it
Edited on Sun Feb-11-07 08:06 PM by 0rganism
However, I imagine a greater portion of the flee-ers would be of somewhat different socio-economic standing than those who typically flee now, and with a rationale of preserving their acquired wealth rather than simply feeding their families.

I think life would gradually improve for Mexicans, provided this hypothetical Mexican leadership survived whatever coups and economic pitfalls were flung at it from the usual sources. Cuba, Venezuela, and more recently Bolivia are showing how this might proceed; equalization of social and economic burdens is not instantaneous, but it happens faster than one might suppose.

11. If Mexico told the US to take their NAFTA and stick it
up their ass, then maybe there would be less out of work farm workers fleeing to El Norta. It should be noted that it was Clinton that signed NAFTA--a Right Wing wet dream--and it is a disaster for people both North and South of the Rio Grande.

12. That also applies to Canada..... We should never have entered.
into a NAFTA agreement, cause it sucks big time..... Canada is not Mexico as far as poverty is concerned, but I don't think that NAFTA has done us any favors.

13. Mexicans would still flee Mexico, but for different reasons
than now. They would flee for the same reasons some Cubans now flee Cuba. The upper classes would feel disenfranchised and unable to exploit Mexican workers as before, so they would come to America to use their fortunes over here. Of course, as in Cuba, some ordinary citizens would still be attracted to America's promise and come here illegaly as now.
