“EYES WIDE OPEN” Acclaimed War Casualties Exhibition Coming to Phoenix and Tempe
with over 450 Pairs of Combat Boots Representing the National Guard Soldiers and the 89 Arizonan Soldiers Killed in Iraq; Parents of Arizonan Killed in Iraq to Speak; Arizona National Guardsman Who Served in Iraq to Speak; Arizonan Whose Son is to be Redeployed in Iraq to Speak, Dozens of White Doves to Be Released

“An exhibit that speaks directly to our hearts and reminds us of the human cost of war.”


Commencing this Saturday, February 17, the Arizona Alliance for Peace and Justice and the Tempe Friends Meeting House in conjunction with the American Friends Service Committee will honor the sacrifice of fallen National Guard and Arizona soldiers, and Iraqi civilians with the Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of War in Iraq National Guard Memorial. The Memorial focuses on the cost of the Iraq war both to our soldiers and Iraqi civilians. The exhibit consists of more than 450 empty combat boots, each bearing the name of a National Guard soldier or the name of one of the 89 Arizona soldiers killed in Iraq.
The exhibit will be on display at Encanto Park, Amphitheatre Island, 2605 N. 15th Avenue, Phoenix, February 17 and 18, 2007, between 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.; at ASU Hayden Lawn, Tempe, on February 26 and 27, between 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.; and Crash Arts at Arizona Testing Laboratories, 817 W. Madison, Phoenix, on March 2 between 6 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., March 3 between 10 am. and 8 p.m., and March 4 between noon and 6:00 p.m.

Beginning at noon, February 17 and 18, at Encanto Park, following the reading of the names of Arizonans killed in Iraq, Isabel and Harry Sr., parents of Harry Shondee Jr., 19, of Ganado, Arizona, who died in Iraq, will speak. http://www.militarycity.com/valor/291438.html Following the talk on February 17 and 18 by Deedra Abboud, Arizona Director of the Muslim American Society’s Freedom Foundation, who is married to an Iraqi and who will speak about the cost of the war to Iraqis, dozens of white peace doves will be released.

Beginning at noon, February 26 and 27, at ASU Hayden Lawn, following the reading of the names of Arizonans killed in Iraq, Mesa Resident Glenn Ray (who in 2005 served in Iraq with the Iraq National Guard and was awarded the Bronze Star), Sherry Bohlen of Military Families Speak Out (whose son has served in the military in Iraq and is the process of being resent back to Iraq) (and on February 26 only, Arizona State Chair of the Jewish Labor Committee Paul Rubin) will speak.
