SENATE CENSURES HOWARD GOVERNMENT ON IRAQ

The Senate has passed a no-confidence motion against the Government of Prime Minister John Howard over its policy on Iraq.
It is the first time the Senate has passed such a motion.

"It is the most serious censure that the Senate can make of a prime minister for his straying from his obligation to do the right thing by the nation, and what could be more important than the deployment of the defence-force personnel, Australian men and women, to a war which many Australians — indeed, the majority of Australians — deemed to be not our place?"

Howard censured over push for war with Iraq

Prime Minister John Howard was yesterday censured by the Senate for misleading the public in his justification for sending Australia to war with Iraq.

It was only the fourth time in more than three decades a sitting prime minister has been censured and the second in Mr Howard's seven-and-a-half years in office.

Australian PM suffers defeat over Iraq

Prime Minister John Howard suffered a historic defeat in an unprecedented no-confidence vote by Australia Senate over his handling of the Iraq crisis. The Labour opposition, leftwing Greens, Democrats and Independent senators used their upper house majority to pass the motion by 34 votes to 31, following an emotional, 11-hour debate over the looming conflict.

Australia and Britain have been the only countries to join the United States in deploying troops to the Gulf in preparation for war in Iraq.

So let's debate Iraq, Howard. Really.
