ok so i have to go the accountant this morning and we got to talking and she said she took her Dad to see Rudy speak at some event, Dad is elderly and a republican and unable to safely drive anymore. Anyhow some of his buds were there and after Guiliani got done speaking her Dad and his friends starting talking and all of them basically said the same thing--he's good as a speaker but he has nothing more to offer.

I disagree about him being a good speaker but i thought it was interesting that this group saw through at least some of Guiliani's facade.

1. He had one day of relevance.
He still has to account for all the days, months and years before and after 9/11.

4. My 76 year old mother wants to vote for him.
In her livingroom, she has two pictures of Guiliani goofing around with some of the children in our family.

6. Sounds like my 86 year old Nana except her pics are Jack, Bobby and Martin
someone asked her if she was a Reagan Democrat and she said "No Dear there is no such thing, i'm a democrat democrat" and she would never vote for Rudy.

18. My family are all New Yorkers...and democrats.
If you compare the Rudy who mayored NYC to Hillary who's our senator...Rudy (back then) seemed more like a democrat then Hillary.

Now Rudy's in bed with the big guys...he lost that common sense feel about him.

If my 76 year old mother votes for Rudy because she feels he did a better job for New Yorkers then Hillary...I'll be proud of her because she'll be willing to cross party lines for the good of our nation. ...Be sure, I will enlighten her about the new Rudy before the '08 elections.

...I took what you wrote as a dig.

22. You would love my 86 year old Grandmother in-law....
She grew up in Hungary, she thinks we should all take to the streets and go after Bush with pitchforks and axes.

I told her, Granny we can’t do that.

She said, “An axe cuts wood, right?”

I said, Yeah. ...She replied “It would work then”.

Peace. :pals:

5. Will someone explain to me what he did re 9/11 that wasn't his job?
He gets credit for all of this "leadership" and "above and beyond" shit, and I never say anything that a mayor shouldn't have been doing to begin with.

Besides, with his stance on gun control the asshole has no chance anyway.

7. That's how lacking we are in true leadership! :(
Yes, we need to commend people for doing their job, but making them exemplary for only doing what they signed up to do??

Just proves how little most "leaders" are doing. :(

9. Good point.
Sure, he put in his time - and his effort was obvious - but nothing I saw went above and beyond the call of being a mayor. When your city's on fire and people are dying, it's not a 9-5 job.

12. Nothing ...
He did what ANY other mayor in this country would have done, Ray Nagin aside ...

However, there is a flip side to him taking advantage of 9-11 to make a presidential bid ... He couldn't do that if the ENTIRE republican party didn't have a complete and totally morpid facination, make that complete worship, of 9-11 ... He was THERE when it happened, and a republican, and to these people, that is equivilent to him being there and touching the hand with jesus ... It annoints him ...

I went ROUND and ROUND with some RWF on another board, who just absolutely would not let go of the idea that Rudy "save lives" on 9-11 ...

He needs do NOTHING, his past accounts for NOTHING ... He is a living, breathing connection to 9-11, and 9-11 is THE foundation of the republican party now ... These people don't need much to overlook aspects of a candidates background that may make them unsuitable for the job - the got the current resident at 1600 Pennsylvania elected TWICE, the one day after his second election readily admitted he wasn't REALLY a conservative ...

Whatever way the wind blows ...

15. As I believe others have mentioned before, what he did was show up on TV.
Since the "commander-in-chief" was bouncing around the country, someone needed to hold a news conference. So to answer your question, "What did he do?" Absolutely nothing...which was still more than Bush did.

the teeth, the eye thing-you know he opens super wide and the way he was sitting, legs totally open. Overall it was a very unstatemens like look.

14. Does Rudy have a new speech?
Up till now, he's had only one that he got big bucks delivering - with the stipulation that it NOT be recorded, to obscure the fact that all he had was a set speech.

16. He'll never cut it as a presidential candidate.
If you think Bush is petty and vindictive, you ain't seen nothin' till you've seen St. Rudy be petty and vindictive. I listed some instances here:

I don't want this guy anywhere near the White House. Good thing he won't make it through the primaries, IMO.

20. Got my Newsweek today, and some of the stories
about his famous temper & ego were priceless:

1. "After Police Commissioner William Bratton's innovative crime-fighting landed him on the cover of Time magazine in 1994, Giuliani sacked him, apparently for getting too much publicity.

2. "When New York Magazine placed ads on buses in 1997 referring to the magazine as 'Possibly the only good thing in New York Rudy hasn't taken credit for,' Giuliani leaned on the transit authority to take the ads down. A judge upheld the magazine's free speech rights."

3. In 2000 "he used a press conference to inform his second wife, Donna Hanover, that he wanted a divorce. She responded with her own announcement that her husband had been having an affair with an aide for several years."

"Giuliani gets mostly high marks as mayor -- for cutting crime and welfare and for heroic leadership after 9/11. But New Yorkers also remember his thirst for power and bouts of unwarranted nastiness. After 9/11 the mayor briefly weighed challenging the city constitution that barred a third term. 'He was hellbent on doing it,' says one former aide from this period, who wouldn't be named for fear of retaliation. McCain was among those who talked him out of it, arguing that he'd be better off going out on top."

Newsweek, 2/19/07 pg. 10
