U2, Oasis, Coldplay to play 'Live Earth'?
Monday, February 12 2007, 16:37 GMT

By David Cribb

The list of artists that will play this summer's 'Live Earth' concert will be announced next week, with U2 and Kylie Minogue expected to top the list.

Other acts taking part in what will be the biggest charity gig ever held are thought to include Oasis, Robbie Williams and Coldplay.

Last Friday, American vice president Al Gore met with a host of media personnel in London, to begin planning the event. "It was the most stellar array of media figures you could ever see but to get all those people in the room on a Friday night shows how willing they are to help," said an inside source.

The live shows will take place across the world - in England, the USA, Japan, South Africa and Brazil - and will occur on July 7 of this year.

Gore himself was keen to rally the cause at the meeting, telling those present: "Television hypnotises billions but it is a one-way conversation filling minds with junk food. The only way to breathe meaning back into our words is through music. We need you."

Al Gore In Works To Announce Global Concert Event

I have a feeling he is doing this as well as preparing to speak at the Oscars (as was his Grammy appearance last night) in order to enlist aid for this concert which is going to be the greatest event for our Earth EVER.

And Melissa Etheridge just has to play it too. I hope she does. Her song, "I Need To Wake Up" is now my rallying cry for the environmental movement just as, "Mercy Mercy Me" by Marvin Gaye was my inspiration when I was only twelve and just getting involved in this issue.

I am SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS and will be trying to help out in any way I can to spread the word about it. This is more exciting and in my opinion can be more effective than any boring presidential campaign because he is reaching the entire world with this message! There is no limit to what we can do...That is the message. Thank you Mr. Gore, this is just what the world needs to jumpstart it! The full line-up of artists will be announced February 15.

6. I think it needs to span generations...
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 06:43 AM by RestoreGore
I would love to see Santana, Fleetwood Mac, the Moody Blues, and would love to see the Doors (I loved Jim Morrison and I know this would have been something he would have loved) as well as Cheryl Crow, Maroon 5, Coldplay, to Nelly Furtado ( I like her new song.) And U2 and the Police are definite choices. Even my teen son said that in order to get people of all ages to pay attention to this message they will need musicians from all decades to bring people together. I think this is going to be spectacular and our Earth deserves nothing less.

Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 06:42 AM by RestoreGore
There are all kinds of people in this world as well, and while the groups named are all great, I like New Age too, and would love to see Enya perform. Actually, I link New Age Music to the environment and matters of sprituality, and that definitely corrolates to the moral and spiritual issue of saving our world so I think it fits.

7. I honestly thought there would be more responses...
Considering how so many here love Al Gore and support everything he does...This is THE event of the planet in my view, and for Mr. Gore to be coordinating this in order for people all over this planet to get a DIRE WARNING and a message of HOPE that we can work together to solve it is incredible.

A big concert will do more to save the earth than a competent executive. Everyone knows that.
After all, Live Aid ended poverty, right?

With Mr. Gore's conviction and experience behind it, you bet your ass it is. And your myopia is showing... it isn't just about the CONCERT or ONE DAY, it is about what can FOLLOW. But thanks for your vote of non confidence in Mr. Gore in being able to do this, and your admittance of your lack of support for his endeavors. Duly noted.

19. Well, while you are sitting back talking music
and outlining who you hope will be on the guest list of musical performers in July, I'm out doing something. I'm working with several activists in my city to organize others for a "Communities Uniting for Climate Action Now!" in April (see http://stepitup2007.org/ for details). In addition to finding others in my own community to take action, we're also organizing to lobby our Congressional leaders to actually do something about cutting carbon emissions. You should think about signing up and help organize people in your community and spend a few hours helping to make differences where you can by organizing and educating others to live a carbon neutral life-style.

21. Already doing it
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 01:54 PM by RestoreGore
And of course, you're here talking as well, so what your point is regarding what anyone is talking about here is lost on me. And I already know of that site, and already working in my community and have been for months. But perhaps Mr. Gore would be interested in knowing that you think his endeavor is only "talking music." This is about more than talking music, this is about working to effectively get people involved globally through music which is a very powerful and inspirational medium, with these concerts reaching 2.5 million people. I also intend to go to Washington in July and help with this if I can.

22. No, Gore knows what he's doing and he has a plan
He's got the people in place and he's got the contacts to make it happen. That's his thing. He can talk about music all he wants.

This is the first I've ever heard of you participating in the http://stepitup2007.org/ action. How could have been working on this "for months" it was only announced two weeks ago? Or are you saying that you have only been working in your community "for months"?

And if you are intimating somehow that I don't have the right to talk about this, sorry. When it concerns his efforts on this crisis, I will talk about them.

25. Coming up on my 20th anniversary myself
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 03:53 PM by Mabus
and that's on just one of the projects that I've been involved it. I guess you can say I've been working in my community for over 20 years on environmental issues ranging from protecting our dwindling wetlands to encouraging others to mitigate/eliminate their carbon footprints. In fact, as a result of one of the projects I've been working there have been changes in NEPA & FHwA guidelines.

I'm not intimating that you don't have a right to talk about something. I'm not sure where that came from. I'm not the one who jumps on threads and actively discourages people from taking action on other issues that will help take the steps necessary to save our environment and make our world more habitable.

Talk all you want. Spend the rest of your day dreaming about the musical line-up and, hey, may be you can even come up with your preferred order of appearances of the guests. In the meantime I'll keep working to actually get things done just like I have for over 20 years.

27. You keep saying that
I don't have time to be jealous. I've been working.

Hmmm, if iirc, the last time you accused me of jealousy was when you mentioned you said "hello" to Gore. When I told you that I had actually met and had a conversation with both Al and Tipper at a private party and that he used part of our conversation in his next public speech you started accusing me of jealousy. Hell, I didn't even get to mention the time I spent with Al and Tipper at the Tennessee delegate breakfast during the DNC (where I was an invited guest) or the other times that I've spent actually conversing with one of the Gores (about the environmental work each of us is doing) before you went off accusing me of jealousy. I don't have to be jealous of you. I've actually done things that have enabled me to talk with people about important matters like saving our planet. More importantly, I actually do more than berate and bully people on-line, I get things done. I'm not jealous of you. I pity you.

By the way, do you still have those incandescent candles you were trying to hawk a few years ago? Oh yeah, that was back when you were trying to draft Gore after he had endorsed Dean and before you actually figured out that one of Gore's primary messages was about global warming, you know, things like energy efficient lighting, not the energy inefficent incandescent ones you were hawking. See, there are some of us who actually listen to what Gore says, we don't go off half-cocked and try to bully people to see things our way. Some of us have been walking the walk and talking the talk for more than a few weeks.

All I can say is: I'm glad you're actually starting to do something about global climate change instead of just talking about it. It would have been nice if you had been actually practicing what you've been preaching all these months. If there's anything I could be jealous of you over it would be your inability to tell others what to or how to think without actually doing it yourself. How do you do that without your head exploding?

Take care of those incandescent candles. At the very least I'd hope you would consider to take the time to recycle them properly and think about the future before you make such energy wasting orders again.

"According to reports, Gore is looking to throw Live8-style bashes in cities across the world, including London, Washington, D.C., Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto, with each being broadcast worldwide. Speculation has it, organizers will announce the series, which looks to bring global warming to the attention of 2.5 million people, in London today."

I'll update the thread as I find out more. All I know is, he looks VERY happy in the picture with this article.
