A PC Kelly Essay ON SECURITY - Part 1

Across the world tyranny is on its dark and evil march once again. From the Russian Federation, to the "People's" Republic of China, and even in our own country, the United States of America, tyranny is taking hold.

And not one of tyranny's various victories involves the governments of these countries, it has to do with the minds of the people in these countries. Tyranny has marched straight into the heart of even America, and it's various tools are at work chipping away at liberty.

Tyranny does not exist in reality, for in reality all people are free. The only thing preventing people from being free, is their own minds. Their own fear or hatred. Fear and hatred are the two primary tools of tyrants, throughout the ages these tools have been used to subjugate vast numbers of people into the suffering that is tyranny.

You will hate x group of people, and to do that you must lose all independence of me, the tyrant, in order to hurt that group most effectively.

You will fear myself, the tyrant, or you will fear x group of people, and in the process you must lose all independence of me to protect yourselves.

In America in particular, the message of the tyrant is clear: you must lose the "red-tape" or "interference" of liberty to protect yourselves from the danger of terrorism, and in the process ignore the exponentially greater danger of allowing me, the tyrant, to have increased or even absolute power.

Let this message be clear to tyrants the world over, one day the people of the world will know their natural state, and they will understand how little power a tyrant or a group of tyrants has over them.

The natural truth of tyranny is that one person cannot truly control millions, or even billions. It is impossible for anyone to project so much force without the help of many, many other people. And even those people cannot be forced to do anything by a tyrant, if they so choose.

Tyranny is only in our minds, I restate it because that knowledge and its power should never be underestimated.

Whenever we hear calls to our baser instincts, let our reason and logic overcome those calls by understanding a far greater danger is presented by a tyrant than any other threat.

We must understand that as surely as we can die by the hand of a common criminal or terrorist, we can die by the hands of our government. I would suggest that a government must have tools at its disposal to use force upon mass numbers of people, to protect a given country from foreign tyranny, and that these weapons may be retrained on a country's own people.

Liberty is our security from all types of tyranny. It is security "from the arbitrary use of authority." I would even extend that definition to the arbitrary use of power in general. For even though one person may not have enough power to control an entire nation, one person can harm another person. Traditional crime (robbery, homicide, etc...) and terrorism are both forms of tyranny.

Security, therefore, must be security from all forms of tyranny and it must be proportionate to the threat posed by the various forms of tyranny.

Tradition crime is a very real form of tyranny, but each act of tyranny usually affects a single person or a small group of people. Unfortunately, the fact that almost all people have the physical ability to commit crime prevents it from being overcome very easily.

Terrorism affects larger groups of people than traditional crime, and it may impact a whole nation (as it has in our own nation), it is therefore more dangerous than traditional crime. However, as its powers to effect vast groups of people rely not upon physical force, but mental enslavement to fear/hatred, it is far easier to overcome than traditional crime. While there is some risk of danger to oneself, the risk of physical harm is no where near that for traditional crime. On 9/11 nearly 3,000 people were killed, in 2001 alone nearly 16,000 died as a result of homicide, not including 9/11.

Dictators have the powers of both traditional crime and terrorism, it is not merely the use of force against people to instill fear or hatred in their hearts, is also the very real threat of the dictator's followers inflicting mass casualties upon dissident groups. The Holocaust, the Great Purge, and the Cultural Revolution are all examples of the great power of dictators and their followers. But, just as it is far easier to overcome terrorism than it is to overcome traditional crime, it is easier to overcome government based forms of tyranny.

The rule with tyranny is clear, as the power of one person to control a group through directly harming them decreases, the power to overcome the tyrant increases. On the other hand, as the number of people blindly following a tyrant increases, the number of people who may be harmed by those followers increases.

Today I leave you with this final message:
We should fear the existence of tyranny, and not tyrants themselves. Fear of tyranny becoming a reality is the greatest vigil for liberty.
